After that day, I didn’t see Lex again.
Gigi dragged me out shopping, her voice full of irritation as we strolled down the street. “Lex is a total lunatic–seriously messed up in the head.
“Waylon told me that on the night of my engagement party, Lex completely trashed a bar. Who even does that? If I didn’t know better, I’d think he had a crush on me.”
She burst out laughing at her own joke.
When the laughter faded, she added, “But I haven’t seen him in ages. Even Ivana was asking Waylon the other day if he’d run into him. Where do you think Lex disappeared to?”
I let my fingers drift over a rack of clothes. “Who knows.”

That night, I was ambushed at my doorstep.
Lex stood there, reeking of alcohol, swaying slightly as he blocked my way. “Audrey,” he slurred, voice low and raw, “I had a nightmare yesterday. I dreamed you got married–to my uncle. Tell me it’s not true.”
“You promised me. You said you’d only marry me. How could you marry someone else?”
I didn’t respond. I just pulled out my phone, fingers moving to call Joshua.
Before the call could connect, Lex lunged forward, snatching the phone i hurling it to the ground. It shattered into pieces with a sickening crack.
His eyes were bloodshot. “Audrey, answer me!

He sank to his knees right in front of me, his shoulders shaking. I’d never seen Lex like this broken, begging.
