Mark frowned when he heard me addressing him as my ex–husband.
I thought he would accuse me of playing hard to get and losing his temper like before.
Unexpectedly, he just sighed, touched the top of my head and said, “Are you still mad at me? Honey, I admit that I neglected you before, and I promise I will change in the future. Please stop being angry, okay? Where will you be without me?”
Although he changed his temperament for some unknown reason, I was not pleased when I heard the last bit, “The world is big enough. There will be somewhere out there for me.”
Mark interjected, “You know that’s not what I meant.”
I was too jaded to talk more. It seemed that Mark did not want to divide his assets with me, otherwise there was no other reason why he didn’t want a divorce.
I caught a glimpse of Sophie from the corner of my eye, and I diverted the conversation, “Hey, can you get out of my room?”
Sophie’s face instantly turned red, as if she was about to cry. She said cautiously, “I’m sorry, Lily, I just wanted to check if you were safe.”
As she spoke, she looked at Mark expectantly, hoping that he could uphold justice for her as usual.
Mark did relent, but instead of blaming me for her, he softened his tone, “Sophie, please give us some space, I will take care of Lily.” He then shot daggers at Ralph, “You. Get out of here too.”
Ralph, who was peeling an apple for me, laughed out loud. He boldly said in Mark’s face, “How funny. Someone finally realized he should comfort his runaway wife. I wonder where you were before this.”
Mark glared at him angrily, “What does it have to do with you? You should leave.”
Ralph looked at me with a smile, “Lily, do you want me to leave?”
I knew that he was deliberately snarky at Mark for me, so I played along, “Of course not. You hit me, you said you would be responsible for me!
