CHAPTER SIXTY–EIGHT–What Could Have Been
To Sivarra Tech,” Ryan said, raising his glass. “And to the brilliant minds that are going to take us into the future.”
As they sipped their drinks, Laura noticed Rothschild approaching Ryan, engaging him in what appeared to be an animated and positive conversation. She felt a thutter of hope in her chest.
Aiden sidled up to her, his face flushed with excitement and champagne. “We did it,” he said, his voice filled with wonder. “We actually did it.”
Laura smiled, clinking her glass against his. “We did. And you were amazing in there, Aiden. The way you handled that last question… I was impressed. ”
Aiden ducked his head, a pleased smile playing at his lips. “Couldn’t have done it without you,” he said softly. “Thanks for having my back in there.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon and stars began to pepper the darkening sky, Laura found herself leaning against the yacht’s railing, watching the moonlight dance on the waves. The sound of footsteps behind her made her turn.
Ryan approached, two fresh glasses of champagne in hand. He offered one to Laura, leaning on the railing beside her.
“Quite a day, huh? he said, his voice low.

Laura nodded, taking a sip of the bubbly liquid. “It really was. I still can’t quite believe it’s over.”
Ryan chuckled. “Over? Laura, this is just the beginning.” He turned to face her, his expression serious but warm. “What you and Aiden presented today….it’s going to change everything. And I want you to know that your hard work hasn’t gone unnoticed.”
Laura felt a flutter in her stomach that had nothing to do with the champagne. “What do you mean?”
Ryan’s eyes met hers, holding her gaze. “I mean that there are going to be some exciting opportunities opening up at Sivarra Tech. Opportunities that I think you’d be perfect for.”
His words were professional, but there was an undercurrent of warmth in his voice that made Laura’s pulse quicken. She found herself leaning in slightly, drawn by the intensity of his gaze.
“Ryan, I-” she began, but was cut off by the sound of Julia’s voice calling from across the deck.
“Ryan, darling James wants a word with you!”
The moment shattered. Ryan straightened up, his professional mask sliding back into place. “Duty calls,” he said with a rueful smile. But we’ll talk more about this soon, okay?”
As he walked away, Laura turned back to the ocean, her mind whirling The stars above seemed to shimmer with possibility, reflecting the turbulent mix of emotions in her heart. Excitement for the future, pride in their accomplishment, and a confusing tangle of feelings for Ryan that she wasn’t quite ready to unravel.
She took a deep breath of the salty air, letting it till her lungs. Whatever the future held, she knew one thing for certain today had changed everything. And she was ready for whatever came next.

The polished mahogany doors of the yacht’s conference room swung open, and Laura felt a surge of adrenaline as she stepped inside. The room was awash in natural light from floor–to–ceiling windows that offered a panoramic view of the sparkling ocean. At the center, a long table dominated the space, its surface gleaming under recessed lighting.
James Rothschild sat at the head of the table, his piercing gaze fixed on Laura and Aiden as they made their way to the front of the room. His team of advisors flanked him on either side, their expressions inscrutable. Ryan and Julia took their seats off to one Hyan offering an encouraging nod while Julia’s smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.
side.
Laura took a deep breath, willing her racing heart to slow. She glanced at Alden, noting the sheen of sweat on his forehead, and gave hima reassuring smile.
“Good afternoon, everyone,” Laura began, her voice initially wavering before finding its strength. “Thank you for taking the time to hear about Sivarra Tech’s revolutionary quantum computing technology.”
She launched into their opening slide, a sleek graphic showcasing the company’s mission statement. As she spoke, Laura felt the
familiar rhythm of the presentation take hold, her earlier nerves fading into the background.
Laura noticed Rothschild lean forward slightly, his interest piqued. Encouraged, she delved deeper into their unique approach, explaining how their quantum computer differed from conventional systems.
“While classical computers rely on bits, our quantum system harnesses the power of qubits,” Laura explained, gesturing to a series of intricate diagrams. “This allows for unprecedented computational power and the ability to solve complex problems that are currently intractable for classical systems.”
As Laura finished her section, she turned to Aiden, signaling his cue to take over the technical aspects. However, as Aiden began to speak, his nervousness became apparent. His words came out in a rush, stumbling over each other as he tried to explain the complex architecture of their quantum system.
“The, uh, quantum circuit is designed to, um…” Aiden faltered, his face flushing as he lost his train of thought.
Laura smoothly stepped in, placing a gentle hand on Aiden’s arm. “What Aiden is illustrating here is the innovative structure of our quantum circuit,” she said, pointing to the diagram on the screen. “Unlike traditional quantum models, our system incorporates a novel approach to error correction that significantly increases qubit coherence time…”
As Laura guided the conversation back on track, she noticed Aiden taking a few deep breaths, composing himself. Rothschild nodded approvingly, his eyes darting between Laura and Aiden with interest.
Julia’s voice cut through the room, sharp and sweet. “That’s fascinating, Laura. But how do you address the scalability issues that have plagued quantum computing efforts? Surely maintaining quantum coherence becomes exponentially more difficult as you increase the number of qubits?”
Laura felt a flicker of irritation at the thinly veiled attempt to trip them up, but she kept her expression neutral. “An excellent question, Julia. We’ve actually dedicated a significant portion of our research to addressing that very issue.”
