Shawn sighed, dragged a chair over, and sat down beside me. “Did you enjoy your little vacation?”
“Well, I was spending my ex–husband’s money and living in the house he gave me. Yeah, it was pretty great,” I said deliberately to get under his skin.
His expression stayed neutral, but his eyes were deep. “As long as you’re happy.”

“I’ve noticed you’ve been a bit preoccupied lately. What’s going on? Struggling to make a choice?” I teased. “Want me to help you analyze the situation?”
“Analyze what?” His eyes lit up slightly, intrigued despite himself.
“Oh, you know, between Amy and Queena, which is more suitable wife material?” I smiled sweetly as I said it.
“Tiffany, don’t be childish.” His face darkened instantly. “What kind of gossip have you been listening to?”
I spread my hands innocently. “Please. I don’t have time for that nonsense.”
He frowned and said, “I promised Yuna I wouldn’t marry again. You can relax.”

I was caught off guard by that.
He gave me another look, then quipped, “You’re looking better than the last time I saw you. Could it be that I was just too lousy at taking care of you all these years?”
I never thought Shawn would still have the heart to joke with me. I just said quietly, “You plucked me, placed me in a vase, and gave me only enough water to barely live. Did you really think I’d bloom like that?”
Shawn was speechless.
“Your comeback game’s getting strong. When did you get so sharp–tongued?” He didn’t sound pleased.
“I’ve played the doormat long enough. Time to start being myself,” I said coolly, lips tilting slightly.
“Focus on your work. The hotel project’s yours now,” he said, then opened the door and walked out. He didn’t ask a single thing about Jace. Almost like he trusted me not to mess around.
I clenched my jaw. That’s so typical of Shawn, always with that commanding aura, as if he’s got everything figured out, yet never saying a word. He could see straight through me, so he didn’t need to ask.
Well, he’s wrong. I’m not some kite he cut loose that’s still fluttering around, waiting for his tug on the string. I’m a bird out of the cage now. If he thinks he can manipulate me with quiet control, he’s dreaming.
“Ms. Mayfield, are you free for lunch?” Amy suddenly appeared, smiling as she asked.
I looked at those eyes of hers that screamed ambition and asked, “Is this about work?”
“Ms. Mayfield, no need to be so guarded,” Amy said warmly. “Besides, we’re colleagues now. Can’t we also be friends?”
I nodded. “Sure. Lunch sounds fine.”
Amy picked a restaurant. We left the office separately but arrived around the same time. After ordering, she suddenly leaned in and said, “Ms. Mayfield, I divorced Atlas two years ago.”
