Chapter 9
“Good day, Miss. Appointment?” A lady approached me as soon as I got in: she asked for my coat, and I quickly removed it and gave it to her. “Meeting with Mr. Cooper?” she asked, and I at first shook my head but then changed my mind and quickly nodded
“Yes, I..“I reached into my purse for the note that the lady gave me but cursed when I remembered I had given it to that cab driver. “Um, yes, someone. Can I see the CEO, please?”
“CEO? Why?” A very beautiful woman who came from behind me asked, “Who are you?” She asked, eyeing me head to toe, “And your heels, wow, how did you afford Balenciaga? Did I mention most of the clothes I owned were branded? Yes, Logan was that expensive. I don’t know if it was to make up for his absence, but he bought me expensive designer clothes that if I sold the little suitcase I came with, I could probably make half a million from it, but for this woman to judge me, who did she think she was?
Well, I couldn’t lose it as I needed a job, so I politely smiled and introduced myself, “Im here for a job, there’s a lady I spoke with. I
think she knows the CEO:
“What?” She sounded shocked. “Who will that be? Do you even know where you are?”

Yes. Cooper Publishing.”
“And you
know what we do here?” She was already judging me.
“Of course. I’m a good writer. I’m also good at editing, proofreading, and anything I just need a job.” The last words sounded desperate, but I didn’t care if this was what it took to get a job–to save my baby–then be it, at least before terminating. I should know I tried everything.
“I see, well. I’m in charge when Richard is not here, so let’s see what you have.” She didn’t sound interested; I looked around, and it seemed others were interested in what was happening as their eyes were on us.
“Right here?”
s like now, do you want the job?”
“Yes, of course I..” I quickly pulled out a document from the file. I’ve never had an interview in the open, I should admit it was kind of intimidating and embarrassing,
“What’s this?”
“That’s my high school transcript; you can see I’m excellent in English. I also got…” I pulled out the individual certificate I got for outstanding performance in English: “I didn’t get to graduate, so I don’t have the diploma” I explained, and she just scanned the documents uninterested, then purposely made them fall to the floor and faked an apology.
“Well, this is fine, but this is not America, our standards are different.”
“I know that’s why I brought my drafts; if you can just give it a glance, you’ll see I’m good. I can-
“We are not looking for new writers.”
“Miss, I-
“Please escort the lady out; don’t forget to get your trashy qualifications” She said before she turned and then, without another word, left. It was heartbreaking to watch as everyone was giggling, obviously making fun of me
“Maybe that lady purposely did this. I mean, what was I thinking?‘ I asked myself, a guard was standing, waiting for me to pick up my papers before he escorted me out. I swallowed hard and bent to pick, but before I could reach the papers, someone else picked them. I looked up and was met with a pair of green eyes.
It was a man.
I studied him for a second, taking in his fine qualities, he was just as handsome as Logan, with a sharp nose, cheekbones, and outlined Jawline, his brown loose wave hair that was neatly styled, with waves falling onto his face. Somehow, looking at him was like looking at Logan, except for the eyes and waves, as Logan’s hair was straight and his eyes were brown, but everything else was the same–the thin lips.
God, what was happening? I quickly snapped myself out of my thoughts and cleared my throat
“T–thank you,” I said and asked for my papers, he didn’t respond. Instead, he was still staring at me. He seemed to be lost in his thoughts as he looked at me, almost like memorizing my every feature.

Chapter
Okay, it was beginning to feel weird as I nervously kept clearing my throat.
We stayed lake that until someone tapped on his back; it was a man. I didn’t realize he had been standing with him all this while.
“Oh, you
must be Patricia, our new writer,” he said as he pulled his eyes from me, making me close my eyes for a second as I finally felt relieved. “Wow, this is impressive,” he said, which made me widen my eyes in shock. “Renea was right, you have a potential,” he said as he skimmed through the draft
I was about to thank him when he asked for another draft, “I just want to see the opening of the stories; this is touching,” he said, and 1 quickly reached for my second draft, but before I could hand it to him, someone snatched it from my hands.
“She’s American, we are chasing after British authors.” It was the woman from earlier.
“Good morning to you too, HR; yes, I know”
“Then we can’t work with her unless it’s cleaning, but I doubt it’s the case, as our cleaner is very much alive.” She said, eyeing me up and down; I was honestly lost at what I’d done to her.
“You’re American too; I’m American. In fact, I think an American is what Cooper Publishing needs now.”
“What?”
“Come with me,” he said to me and then walked, the lady couldn’t believe it as she blinked rapidly. Well, I needed the job, so I followed him as he asked.
“Richard, trust me on this one. I mean, you always let me choose, why are you being so difficult with this one?” Yep, she also followed
behind us.
“I’m making this decision, Renea insisted she was good.”
“Renea? Really? What does she know? She’s just-
“That will be all” He cut her off as he asked her to leave since we were in front of a door; she hesitated but didn’t say anything as she later nodded and asked him if he needed anything.
“Do
you need anything?” He turned to me, and I shook my head. “A glass of water for her,” he said, and after a long sigh, she turned and left after promising to be back with a glass of water. I didn’t want to mix in dramas: I just wanted a job, so ignoring what had happened, 1 followed him in and started telling him about the new idea of my story.
“So it’s about divorce?” he asked after I had explained for about ten minutes. It was surprising that he listened without interrupting.
“Yes, you can call it that, but the marriage was a contract, the right term is one–sided. She loved him; she still does, but he his heart belonged to someone else.”

“I see, I think it will do
“You do!” 1 was shocked, and he nodded his head, a small smile tugging on his lips. “So does that?…”
“You have the job; you can start working on this book, and we will do everything for you, from publishing, promoting, and building your brand. This is raw talent, and one thing Cooper is known for is harnessing talent, so congratulations, I will have the lawyer draw up the contract, and we will go from there.” He said, making me cover my mouth
It sounded like a dream, not only was my baby saved, but I would be working with the most popular publishing firm in London and their fans. God, I was also their fan, and every book that was published here was literally my favorite, so here I was, ready to share my
own story.
