Chapter 4 The White Shirt

Bella’s POV: Living alone at the Leone residence, I didn’t expect Madam Carmela to confront me so soon about whether I was cheating. I pondered for a moment, turned to the butler with a calm breath, and continued to face Madam Carmela with a faint smile at the corner of my mouth, denying, “That’s not true.” I tried to accept the deep-seated idea within me, to feel somewhat justified about the unintentional affair. Yes, I had never met the godfather, we had no emotional connection, and we weren’t truly husband and wife, so there was no question of betrayal or infidelity. Moreover, I was the victim last night. Technically, the godfather couldn’t justly punish me. “Still denying it? Search her!” Madam Carmela obviously didn’t believe me. A search? Did Madam Carmela really think I was foolish enough to keep a lover’s belongings at the Leone residence? I looked at Madam Carmela as if she were foolish. Sometimes, I truly couldn’t understand why the godfather’s mother could be so naive and crude, and at times, quite mean. Upon hearing Madam Carmela’s order, the servants hurried upstairs to search my bedroom. I smirked coldly; these servants never really saw me as the mistress of the Leone residence. With just one command from Madam Carmela, they would not hesitate to throw me out. When the servant entered my bedroom, I suddenly remembered the white shirt I had worn back, but no matter, I had a good enough explanation. As expected, the servant found the men’s shirt in my room and handed it to Madam Carmela in front of me. I had planned to dispose of the white shirt, but Madam Carmela arrived too quickly. I glanced again at the butler—his speed in reporting was too fast! “What is this?” Madam Carmela held the shirt, her anger boiling over. I knew she was furious, but as a lady of high society, she wouldn’t just strike someone. “It’s a shirt dress I bought this morning,” I continued calmly. I definitely wouldn’t admit anything, because if it escalated, the Leone family wouldn’t let the Rizzo family off the hook. Though the Rizzo family meant little to me, thinking of my mother still there, I couldn’t completely disregard her situation. My calm demeanor seemed to confuse Madam Carmela, leaving her momentarily speechless. This made me even more certain; Madam Carmela had no concrete evidence. After all, last night’s events had been sudden, unless Madam Carmela had someone watching me 24/7. But if she really had me under surveillance all the time, she would have personally caught me at the hotel last night, instead of rushing over to confront me afterward. This thought solidified my belief—Madam Carmela had no evidence! However, Madam Carmela was not one to give up easily. She kept examining the white shirt in her hands. Then, an embroidered initial ‘N’ with gold thread at the collar appeared before everyone, clearly indicating it was a high-end custom-made piece. Damn! That man’s shirt wasn’t just any off-the-rack item, but a private custom order? If that was the case, then Madam Carmela could send someone to investigate the designer and the buyer. Before I could think of an excuse, Madam Carmela, unable to contain her fury any longer, charged towards me and slapped me across the face. I hadn’t expected Madam Carmela, a lady of her status, to be so crude as to actually strike me. My ears rang, my mind went blank, and my face burned fiercely, followed by intense pain. I wanted to defend myself, but Madam Carmela cut me off, “So you still deny it, Bella? I see you not only betrayed my son but also used the Leone family’s money to support your lover, didn’t you! How dare you keep your lover’s clothes at the Leone residence!”
