Chapter 38
Henry met Prince Michael’s vicious glare with his own. “I’m just considering the bigger picture, Your Highness.”
As Michael was going to marry someone from the marquis‘ household, he really should not make things too ugly.
However, that only left the prince snorting. “Bigger picture? Well said, general! But if you’re really that astute, why were you silent before?”
Was his mouth sewn shut when Rupert–bludgeoned Lilian?
The question somehow stung Lilian too.
She had definitely given up on him and had long since understood that Henry did not care
about her.
So why did her heart still hurt so much?
She bit her own lip lightly, hating her own incompetence even as she quickly fought back the warm tears in her eyes.
Henry had turned toward Lilian as if in reflex at that moment, but from his point of view, she was half–hidden behind Michael, even looking like she was pressing herself against him.
As Henry’s frustration built, his tone turned darker too. “Everyone here knows who’s at fault. Mr. Lestrade was merely disciplining his sister, but even if he went a little too far, it’s their family’s matter. Neither myself nor Your Highness gets to intervene.”
The excuse of family’s matter actually put Michael in an awkward position–even if he was a prince, he had no cause to intervene in a family matter.
Moreover, he needed an alliance with the marquis‘ household–it was another reason he wanted to marry Lilian.
And if he went too far…
Seeing that the prince was silent, Henry turned and glared at his valets.
As a warrior who had shed blood on the battlefield, the glare alone terrorized the valets, making them drop the broomsticks.
Meanwhile, Evelyn was still bawling endlessly in Rupert’s arms. “Are you alright, Rupert?! It’s all my fault… I don’t want that hairpin or the Night Pearl anymore! I just want you to be alright …”
She was even ready to take off her hairpin, but Rupert caught her hand, stopping her. “Don’t. It’s my gift to you, and that means it’s yours. No one will have it even if you don’t want it!”
Everyone knew full well who Rupert meant with ‘no one‘.

Even Lillan inhaled deeply, her body shaking even more, either from the wounds over her back or from Rupert’s words.
Concerned over her injuries, Michael glared at them right then and snarled, “It’s true that I don’t get to intervene in the marquis‘ family matters, but Lilian is going to be my wife! Anyone who hurts her will pay!
“Get Ms. Lestrade out of here! Keep hitting Rupert Lestrade as hard as you can!”
“Yes, Your Highness!” the valets promptly responded, pulling Evelyn away in no time at all.
She refused as she bawled and flailed, but two of the valets held her firmly in place, while the rest once again pinned Rupert to the floor and bludgeoned him once more.
Michael did not even bother to watch.
He turned, scooping Lilian up in his arms as she could no longer stand, and left the shrine.
Henry’s fiery glare followed them–the public was watching! Was he really insisting on dragging Lilian’s reputation through the mud?!
However, Emma stopped him before he could move to stop them.
As he turned, he found Emma shaking her head at him ever so slightly.
It was only then that he realized that he had no right to go after her, given his standing.
present
He could only fight against the hatred flaring inside himself as he clenched his fist. Was he supposed to just watch as she eventually ended up in the arms of another man?!
