After speaking, he grabbed Lisa by the arm and led her away. Tiffany stood frozen, watching them go, biting her lip so hard it nearly bled.
“Tiff,” Nathan said, alarmed. “What are you doing? Don’t hurt yourself.”
Tiffany forced a small, bitter smile. “It’s nothing.”
“I’m going to bring them back!” Nathan growled. “What’s Neil even thinking? He’s supposed to be your fiancé!”
“There’s no need, Nathan,” Tiffany said, pulling him back. “Lisa’s not doing well. You said it yourself–Mr. Hale’s a terrible match. She must be upset. It’s normal for Neil to want to comfort her.”
Nathan had thought the family went too far forcing Lisa into that engagement. But looking at Tiffany’s pale face now, he couldn’t help but snap, “Is Lisa the only one who has it tough? Doesn’t everyone deal with things they don’t want to do?”
“Don’t worry about me,” Tiffany said, shaking her head. “I’m fine, really. Please don’t be upset.”
Her fake smile didn’t convince anyone. But since she insisted she was fine, Nathan had no choice but to suppress his anger.
Neil pulled Lisa into his car.
He leaned over to fasten her seatbelt, but she stopped him. “Where are you taking me?”
“You’re upset, right?” he said, hand hesitating before he returned it to the wheel.“I figured I’d take you out for a while. If you stay at home, they’ll only hurt you again.”
Lisa knew he was right, so she didn’t argue. She turned to the window, clearly not in the mood to talk.
Neil brought her to the mall and handed her a peach–flavored ice cream. “Here, I remember this is your favorite?”
“I don’t like peach,” Lisa said flatly.
“But I remember-”
“That’s because Tiffany hates peach,” Lisa replied calmly. “So I always had to eat it instead.”
Neil paused, then gave a light laugh. “Then what do you really like? I’ll get you something else.”
“No need.” She took the cone and licked it. “I’m not as picky as Tiffany. I eat whatever’s given to me.”
She sat on a bench, watching the crowd pass by below. Her expression was unreadable, and under the soft mall lighting, her features looked like flawless porcelain–beautiful and untouchable.
Neil glanced at her, his heart stirring. “Lisa, why don’t you want to get married?”
“Would you want to marry someone you’ve never even met?” she asked.
“No, of course not,” he said. “But… is that the only reason?”
Lisa frowned slightly. What else did he think it was? Surely he didn’t still believe I had feelings for him?
“Never mind,” Neil said with a smile. “You’ve really changed, though. I remember when you first came to Arglonas–you’d never let go of my sleeve. You were like a scared little animal. It was kind of adorable.”
Lisa lowered her gaze.
She’d died once already. If she hadn’t changed, wouldn’t that make her second chance worthless?
“Lisa, Neil said gently, “I think your father’s made up his mind. He won’t change it. But if you really don’t want to marry a stranger, maybe…”

Lisa lifted her head. “Maybe what?”

Neil took her hand. “I have a cousin who was in a car crash. He’s been in a coma for years, still in the hospital. His mother’s been wanting to find him a wife…”
Lisa blinked. “You’re saying … you want me to marry someone in a coma?”
“Just listen for a second,” Neil said. “His family’s wealthy and drama–free. You wouldn’t need to look after him–it’s just for show. If you’re okay with it, I’ll speak to my aunt. That way, you won’t be stuck marrying some complete stranger, and…”
His gaze was so tender, it could make any woman’s heart skip a beat. “That way, we’d never have to be apart.”
It took Lisa a few seconds to understand what he really meant.
He wanted her to be married on paper to a comatose man–so she could secretly stay by his side.
He didn’t want to give up Tiffany, who gave him status and affection. But he also couldn’t stand the idea of losing Lisa, his “pretty little toy.” He wanted to have it all.
Lisa?” Neil said tenderly. “I promise I’ll treat you well. You’ll never have to suffer again. Will you consider it?”
Lisa stared at him for a moment, then calmly smashed her ice cream in his face and slapped him hard.
“You’re disgusting, Neil.”
