Chapter 83
Austin’s text read, “I’m waiting downstairs.”
Suzanne felt her frustration dissipate a little. She kept her phone and looked up at Marsha and the others. “Marsha, I need to go back now.”
Marsha paused, then turned to Suzanne with a smile. “Alright. Let’s go together.”
Before Suzanne could decline, Marsha had already started saying her goodbyes to Kenneth and the rest of the group. She then walked back toward Suza with a smile. “Let’s go, babe,”
As they stepped out of the private room, Marsha spotted the bar manager making his rounds. She called out cheerfully, “Take good care of my friends and put everything on my tab.”
The manager’s face lit up with a smile as he bowed slightly. “Of course, Ms. Newton. Take care.”
Marsha waved at him before leading Suzanne out of the bar.
At the entrance, the lively noise from inside faded, replaced by a peaceful quiet.
Suddenly, Marsha stopped walking. Puzzled, Suzanne turned back to look at her.
The smile on Marsha’s face was gone, and her eyes now held a trace of guilt. “Babe, I’m sorry. I originally wanted to give you a nice surprise tonight, but instead, I ended up making things complicated.”
A gentle breeze brushed past them, but Suzanne felt a faint warmth in her heart.
She understood Marsha was referring to the incident with Jenson. Stepping forward, she hooked her arm around Marsha’s and leaned her head on her shoulder. “What are you talking about? There’s no need to apologize for such a small matter.”
She knew Marsha had her best interests at heart. If it were anyone else, they wouldn’t have gone through such trouble. Suzanne could never blame her…
Seeing that Suzanne wasn’t upset, Marsha let out a chuckle. “I was just worried and didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable. But…”
Turning to Suzanne, she asked curiously, “What’s the deal with you and Jenson? Are you two really broken up?”
Suzanne paused briefly, her lips curling into a mocking smile. “We were never together in the first place, so there’s nothing to break up.”
For so many years, she had never been acknowledged. In the end, it was all just her wishful thinking.
Marsha’s gaze softened with pity. She had seen all that Suzanne had done for Jenson over the years–her dear friend had suffered so much for that man. Patting Suzanne’s hand reassuringly, Marsha gave a hearty laugh. “It’s alright. Out with the old, in with the new. You’ll find someone even better.” Suzanne smiled faintly and nodded,
Ever since she decided to truly let go, it felt like the weight in her chest had finally lifted.
“But this new one came along pretty quickly, huh!” Marsha suddenly commented mischievously, catching Suzanne off guard. She then turned serious, pointed a finger at Suzanne, and asked, “Tell me, what’s going on between you and Austin?”
Suzanne was stunned momentarily, then playfully grabbed Marsha’s finger with a smile. “I’m not telling you.”
Marsha quickly pulled her hand back, glaring at Suzanne with a clenched jaw. “Oh, so now you’re keeping secrets from me?”
She lunged forward, her hands aiming for Suzanne’s ticklish spots.
Laughing uncontrollably, Suzanne dodged and finally gave in to her. “Alright, alright! I was wrong! I’ll tell you when the time is right, okay?”
Breathless, Marsha finally let her go. With her hands on her hips, she tilted her head and said dramatically, “Hmph! You better, or else…”
She extended her hands, threatening to tickle Suzanne’s waist again.
Suzanne quickly dodged and promised, “I will! If I don’t, I’m a bitch!”
Satisfied with this answer, Marsha retracted her arms smugly. “That’s more like It.”
At that moment, a sharp car horn sounded from the roadside.
