I went downstairs to take out the trash. As I walked out the building door, I ran into a few elderly men and women sitting around a table in the neighborhood, chatting.
One of the elderly men said with admiration, his tone full of praise, “That young man, Jason, he studied abroad, he’s really excellent.”
“My daughter doesn’t have a boyfriend yet. I’m so worried. I wonder if Jason has a partner.”
“Forget it. He came back for a girl.” Another elderly woman shook her head, her tone tinged with regret.
“Jason must have a really great girl in mind.” The elderly man seemed very curious about the woman Jason was interested in.
Listening to their conversation, I couldn’t help but feel my heart race. I asked casually, “Are you talking about Jason Lister?”
The elderly woman immediately nodded and said with a smile, “Yes, we’re talking about him. That young man is handsome and talented. He really makes people envy him.”
“Does he live across from you? Have you seen that girl?”
I thought for a moment and answered, “Oh, I didn’t pay much attention.”
After I said this, I unconsciously gripped the trash bag tighter in my hand, as if something had grabbed my heart.
I kept thinking about this the whole way home.
Since Jason came back to the country for that girl, why did he say he liked me, give me such an expensive necklace, and agree to be with me?
