Chapter 5
me? It’s revolting.”
Her lips curled into a sneer, and suddenly, she let go. I wasn’t prepared. The urn slipped from my grasp.
“Crash!” The urn shattered on the ground, spilling ashes everywhere.
“No!” My scream tore through the air.
I dropped to my knees, frantically trying to gather the ashes as the wind scattered them into oblivion. My hands clawed at the ground, shaking, as if I could pull Grandma back from the void.
In the end, I managed to salvage only a small handful, cradling it in trembling hands. Wrapping the remains in a tissue, I slipped them into my pocket and turned to Kathy.
Something inside me snapped.
I lunged, my hands closing around her throat. “I’ll kill you!” I screamed. “Why? Why do you keep tormenting me? What did I ever do to you?”
A sudden force threw me backward. Brad had kicked me aside, his face a mask of fury. He rushed to Kathy’s side and cradled her like she was made of glass.
“Wendy, have you lost your mind?” he barked.
My mother arrived just in time to witness the chaos. Her face hardened when she saw me. Without hesitation, she slapped me. “Where did this filthy wretch come from? How dare you lay a hand on my daughter!”
I stared at her, my mother, and at Brad. The two people who should have been my closest ties in this world. Yet here they were, tearing me apart.
“My stomach… it hurts,” Kathy whimpered, clutching her abdomen. Blood trickled down her legs, staining her skirt crimson.
Panic swept over Brad. Without a second glance at me, he scooped her into his arms and rushed into the hospital.
I stayed where I was, unmoving. I knew it was only a matter of time before the truth surfaced.
And soon enough, it did.
Brad found out that Kathy was carrying someone else’s child. His face turned an ominous shade, his voice trembling with fury as he pointed at her mother “So this was your plan? You wanted me to raise someone else’s child? My family won’t let this slide!”
He had thought she was a pure and innocent lady, but she turned out to be the opposite. The illusion shattered, leaving him visibly wrecked.
I laughed. I couldn’t help it. Pointing at him, I said, “Serves you right, Brad. You deserve every bit of this.
He turned to me then, his eyes filled with something I couldn’t quite place. Before I could react, he pulled me into a desperate embrace. “Wendy, let’s start over. You and Grandma were the only ones who ever treated me well.”

I shoved him away, my slap echoing through the hallway. “You dare mention Grandma? You killed her! You’re a murderer, Brad. I hate you!”
He stumbled back, the pain etched deep into his face. But no amount of regret would ever erase what he had done.
