Soon, my mother and Angel rushed to the police station.
Officer John sighed helplessly after going through my mother’s phone. “Melissa is only a suspect. We can’t confirm she’s the killer just from this photo,” he said calmly.
However, my mother was agitated. “It’s definitely her! No one knows her better than I do. She’s the murderer you’re looking for!”
Officer John reassured her until she had calmed down slightly. Then, he changed the subject and asked, “What does she mean by wanting to ride the Ferris wheel with you!”
My mother sneered and replied, “Last week, I took Angel to the amusement park and posted about it. She must have seen it and felt jealous. That’s why she killed someone to taunt us!”
I felt nothing but sadness after hearing her words.
Indeed, I was jealous. After all, my mother’s posts were filled with every detail of Angel’s life, and there were no traces of me. I would always torture myself by scrolling through their photos over and over, hoping that one day I would be part of them, too.
Officer John glanced at Angel, who was nervously fidgeting by the doorway.
Angel sensed his gaze on her. So, she lowered her head as a flicker of uneasiness flashed across her eyes.
My mother didn’t seem to sense her reaction as she dragged the conversation back. “You need to arrest her now! Angel’s safety is at risk as long as she is out there. I’ll release the news later today. She’s not going anywhere.”
Officer John frowned upon hearing her words and said, “We’re still investigating the case. Furthermore, she’s merely a suspect as of now. Please be patient.”
“Patient?” My mother glared at him. “How long are you guys going to wait? Can’t you see that she is the murderer? Why are you guys protecting her? What a testament to justice the police force is!” She scoffed.
Then, she pulled Angel close and said, “Fine then. If you guys are going to protect a murderer, I’ll take matters into my own hands!”
Officer John watched as my mother stormed off before saying to his assistant, “Trace Melissa’s phone.”
I wanted to listen to what he was about to say, but my spirit was tugged back to my mother’s side.
Back in the car, my mother was still fuming. She gripped the steering wheel tightly and was breathing heavily. Angel patted her back and said gently, “Calm down, Mom.” She seemed nervous as she nestled closer to my mother. “I’m scared, but I’ll protect you.”
When my mother heard her words, her expression softened “I’ll protect you too, Angel.”
Angel intertwined her fingers with my mother’s and asked, ‘Are you really going to release the news? I want her caught as soon as possible so she can never bother us again.
I could feel my last bit of hope fade away as I watched a thoughtful look appear on my mother’s face.
“The police conference is tonight. I’ll make sure everyone knows that Melissa is the killer.”
