I doubted my mother would miss such a massive clue since the killer had sent the message to provoke her.
As my mother looked at the photo, her hands started to tremble. Then, she clenched her fists tightly as her expression became incredulous.
When her assistant caught a glimpse of the message, slie was horrified. “Could it really be Melissa…”
“It is Melissa!” My mother cut her off sharply.
Her eyes were filled with anger as she breathed heavily. It seemed as if she had just received devastating news.
As I watched her reaction up close, I covered my face and was unable to hold back my tears from falling
‘Mom, so you do care after all. You would still feel the pain of losing me.‘
When I came to that conclusion, I floated toward her and reached out as I tried to embrace her.
For a brief moment, it almost felt like her warmth reached my spirit.
Suddenly, her expression twisted in fury as she shouted, “I knew it! She has done it again! She killed someone!”
‘I killed someone?‘ At that moment, I froze and stared at her in disbelief.
My mother’s face was filled with hatred, and her gaze was filled with a searing resentment that made a chill run through me.
“She killed someone and sent me the photo. I always knew she was a monster!”
My mind went blank the minute those words registered in my mind.
‘Mom, what are you talking about?‘
“No wonder she didn’t pay rent. She’s on the run!” She scowled.
My hope seemed to have shattered along with her words. Right now, all I felt was that fate must be playing yet another cruel joke on me.
Only now did I finally understand that I had never earned her trust.
What lay between us was only hatred.
All my hopes and dreams of patching our relationship back together were just wishful thinking.
