The grief of losing Ivy was unbearable. In the days Clinton had abandoned me, it was Ivy who had kept me going Now that she was gone, I was utterly alone.
For seven days, I stayed locked in my room. Only hunger finally drove me out, and I reminded myself that Ivy wouldn’t have wanted to see me waste away like this.
The moment I opened the door, I saw Clinton waiting there. He rushed toward me and took my hands. “Suzy, I made your favorite food. Look at you. You’ve lost so much weight.”
I didn’t take it and sa
id, “No need. Sign the divorce papers and stay as far away from me as possible.”
Clinton shook his head frantically. “I don’t believe you. You can’t leave me. You love me too much to do that. Without Ivy, I can’t lose you, too. Please, let me make it up to you. I’ve cut all ties with Gemma, and I will never abandon you for her again.”
I cast an indifferent glance at him and responded, “Do you really think you still matter to me? You’ve always known what I cared about, Clinton. But you stood by and watched me fall apart while you carried on with your life. “I was foolish enough to believe you’d come around, but I never thought it would cost me lvy. If it means keeping Ivy alive, I’d gladly erase you from my life. I don’t want to love you anymore. The price is too heavy, and once is enough”
Clinton’s face contorted in anguish. “Suzy, tell me. What will it take for you to forgive me?”
I sneered at him, “Maybe in the next life.”
That was the last conversation we had. The next time I heard about Clinton, it was from the police.
I learned that Clinton’s mental state deteriorated rapidly after he lost both Ivy and me.
