Chapter 30
There was a knock on the door. I opened it to find Selena standing outside, but before I could say anything, her phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Is this Selena Morris, Christopher Morris‘ family member? We’re calling from Ashenford Central Hospital’s emergency room. Please come right away.
I could hear the urgency in the doctor’s voice, even from where I stood.
Without another word, Selena grabbed my wrist in a panic
“Seb, take me to the hospital,” she said, her voice trembling.
I glanced at her, said nothing, and pulled her downstairs.
The hospital was packed.

Since I met her, I knew that Selena had always been calm under pressure. But into the crowd like a headless chicken, desperately trying to find the emergency room.
“Come with me.” I suddenly gripped her hand. “I know a doctor. Don’t worry.”
I guided her down a quieter hallway, away from the sea of people. She was pressed so close to me, it felt like we were squeezing through a subway car. With my one free hand, I quickly dialed a number on my phone.
Before long, someone in a white coat appeared at the end of the hall.
“Christopher Morris? He has a history of heart disease, right?” the doctor asked as he led us down the VIP corridor.
Selena nodded quickly. “So, is it a relapse of his heart condition?”
The doctor shook their head. “No, he got kicked in the chest during a fight.”
Selena had mentioned her brother before. From her words, I could tell he was a good man.
“He’s pretty gutsy. Even with so many people against him, he still threw the first punch.”
We made our way further into the hospital.
It had been one of her brother’s colleagues from the security company he worked for who had called for emergency help.
Selena knew him too. As soon as she saw him, she called out, “Liam!”
Liam was sitting outside the emergency room, smoking in the hallway. When he saw Selena, the first thing he said was, “Lena, what have you been doing behind your brother’s back?”
A nurse
came over to remind lilin that smoking wasn’t allowed. Liam flicked the cigarette to the ground and stomped it out, then pulled out another one, slipping it between his flungers with a heavy sigh.
“Someone told your brother that you were messing around with your best friend’s boyfriend, and that you two were together.”
I froze,

Could it be Jessica again?
From what I gathered, Christopher had been at his job as a security guard outside an investment firm when a few people walked by and mocked him.
“Do you know him? Heard his sister stole her best friend’s boyfriend. That same best friend of hers saved him a while back.”
“And I heard his sister’s best friend helped him land this security job too.”
“Man, you can’t trust anyone these days. Zero conscience, just stabbing her best friend in the back!”
“Seriously, what’s wrong with these girls? Why go after a taken man? Are there no other men left in the world?” Liam’s words hit Selena like a cold wave, leaving her trembling uncontrollably.
So, her brother had heard those rumors about her? That’s what led him to start a fight?
1 stepped aside and pulled out my phone to call Jessica. But just as I was about to, my phone rang with a call from James.
“You’re at Ashenford Central Hospital, right? Jess had nothing to do with what happened to Christopher. It was me. Come downstairs. I’ll be waiting for you in the parking lot. And bring Selena with you.”
