Chapter 43
To completely sever Selena’s lingering hopes, I moved away. I also deliberately avoided any chance of running into her. During that time, Jessica called me frequently and even came to see me a few times. But I turned away every time.
I knew clearly where my heart lay–I loved Selena, deeply
Turning her down wasn’t because I still had unresolved feelings for Jessica. It was because I wanted Selena to be free to chase her dreams without hesitation.
At one point, I had considered going abroad with her, supporting her as she pursued her goals.
But there was always James.
He had made it clear–if I didn’t let go, he would continue to threaten Selena..
With my current abilities, I couldn’t stand against James. Besides, he promised me that he would arrange for Christopher to receive the best medical treatment overseas. After making another call to James to confirm the arrangements, I got the news the next morning. Christopher had already left the country, accompanied by medical professionals.
I thought everything was settled. But what I didn’t expect was for Selena to seek me out the day before she was supposed to leave.
“I thought I had a chance,” she said the moment she saw me, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady.
Finally, with quiet resentment, she added, “Why did you go out of your way to avoid me? Do I not even deserve explanation?”
an
Without answering, I simply turned to face her, silently watching. I saw her slowly suppress the frustration on her face, biting her lip until it turned pale. Her eyes darkened with sadness, filling the space between us with a heavy
ache.
“Sebastian, do you really like Jessica that much?” she asked, her tone flat, like she already knew the answer. “Or is it that you now can’t stand the sight of me after finding out about me and James?”
Selena’s gaze bore into me, unrelenting
I chuckled. “Selena, we’re adults. We make our choices. Stop holding on. Let’s end this on good terms.”
“Did you ever love me?” she asked, her voice breaking as tears spilled down her cheeks.
My chest tightened, every instinct screaming at me to comfort her, but I forced myself to stay cold.
“No. From the start, you were just someone I used to help me move on. Look at the world we live in, Selena. What’s real? What’s fake? It all blends together. Don’t look at me like that. The world doesn’t stop spinning just because someone walks away.”
The ache in my chest flared again, sharper than ever. I needed her to leave because I didn’t want to hurt her anymore. Every word I said felt like a blade turning against me.
Selena shook her head furiously, unable to speak through her tears. Even on this warm summer night, I could see her trembling, her grief radiating off her in waves. Finally, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a small cloth pouch. Cradling it in her hands as though it were frage, she held it out to me.
“You once said that I could use this to make a wish,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
