Chapter 50
It had been over two years since I last saw James. He looked so different now–much thinner, his face pale and sallow. The energy he once had was completely gone. As we spoke, I discovered he was gravely ill with late–stage kidney failure.
Maybe it’s true what they say when people were near the end, they spoke more openly and honestly.
He looked at me and said, “Sebastian, back then, I was the one who tore you and Selena apart. Now, I’m about to die. I can’t stop you anymore. Why don’t you go to her?”
I stared at him, my lips curling into a cold smile. “There’s no need. Things between us were impossible for a long time.”
It had been two years. Selena had probably moved on. Since made my choice back then, I shouldn’t bother her
anymore.
He looked like he wanted to say more, but I cut him off before he could, saying, “To love someone, sometimes you just have to wish them the best and let them go. That’s all.‘
James took a deep breath. “I really want to apologize to you. I know I messed up, and I was wrong… I know you won’t forgive me, but I’m sorry.”
I sighed. “Lena and I were never meant to be. You were a turning point in my life, James. I owe you so much. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Let’s just leave the past behind us and stop dwelling on it. It’s over.”
After seeing James off, I stood there for a long time, gazing at the sky.
What was Lena doing right now?
“Don’t hate me for too long. You have to be happy, okay?” I murmured.
I was about to head back to the office when Jessica approached me.
“Seb, you should go to Selena.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “What’s going on with you guys..
“No, just let me speak,” she interrupted, her eyes serious. “Four years ago, I wasn’t the one who gave Timothy the two hundred thousand dollars. It was Selena. She just used my name to send it. She knew how much he was bothering you, so she sold two of her mother’s heirloom bracelets to raise the
money.”
She
paused for a moment, then added, “She never told you about it. She thought I didn’t know. But I did. And I used that to trick my cousin and you. So, now you have to go to her. You need to go find her.”
I stood there, stunned, the weight of her words sinking in. It took me a long moment to process everything “Why are you telling me this?”
Jessica looked at me, her gaze softening as tears slowly started to fall. “I can’t keep making mistakes.”
She handed me an airplane ticket. “Go. I’ll watch over things here at the company.”
I took the ticket from her. But just before I turned to leave, something made me stop.
I turned back to her and said, “I hope you and Logan will always be happy.”
She blinked, caught off guard by the sudden sincerity in my volce.
“Thank you. I hope you’ll be happy too,” she replied with a smile.
