1 suddenly remembered that back in university, I had been part of the student council. Aaron, a year below me, was assigned to me for a few days to learn the ropes.
Even back then, he was much the same as he is now–cool and aloof, with that untouchable demeanor, though every now and then, a rare flicker of shyness would break through.
Later, I left the department for personal reasons, and whatever interactions I had with Aaron pretty much ended there. My private contact with him on WhatsApp was from those days.
After securing a spot for graduate studies at the same university in my junior year, I graduated last year and joined this company only to find my direct supervisor was none other than my former junior.
Aaron majored in finance, probably to prepare to take over the family business, while I was just a lowly programmer. Or, to put it nicely, a competent, top–tier university graduate programmer.
My mind had wandered a little too far, so I quickly pulled myself back.
“Ahem, thank you, Mr. Ford. I’ll go rest now.‘
“)
I snatched up the room card and headed straight for the room I’d booked, not wasting a second before diving into the soft, plush bed.
“Oh, this is bliss!” I sighed happily.
After a day of running around, I could finally sleep like a baby.
Originally, my plan was to settle everything by New Year’s Eve and head home in peace. Thanks to Nicolas‘ bizarre family, things had wrapped up far sooner than expected. With no need to keep up appearances in front of his family, I ended things quickly and decisively.
And as for Nicolas? Whether it was guilt or fear of me demanding the money, he had practically vanished into thin air without a word.
egy
Of course, I knew very well that given the state of his so–called “business,” there was no way he’d produce the money in a week.

But at least my warning had bought me some peace of mind for now.
As for the debt?
As long as he was still breathing, I wasn’t worried about getting my money back. If it came to it, I’d take him to court, have him blacklisted, and ruin his entrepreneurial dreams for good.
At first, being single again felt a little strange, but it didn’t take long for me to fall completely in love with my newfound freedom.
“Claire, want to hit up the bar around the corner tonight?”
I waved a hand dramatically. “Let’s go! Drinks are on me tonight, ladies!”
“Woohoo! Claire, you’re the best!”
“We love you, Claire!”
These troublemakers were my work friends, and when they heard about my breakup with Nicolas, they didn’t pry or press for details. Instead, the moment we clocked out, they dragged me out to have fun.
Just then, a voice interrupted our lively chatter.
