Skyla’s face twisted in disappointment. Hurt and grievance were written all over it.
Then, as if summoning all her courage, she lifted her chin and met my gaze head–on. “Mrs. Spencer, I want to ⚫ formally apologize to you today.”
Her voice was clear and earnest. “I have always admired Mr. Spencer as a person, and because of that, I said things I shouldn’t have. I’m sorry! But I swear, nothing between Mr. Spencer and me ever crossed any moral lines.

Her voice choked at the end, making her look pitiful and helpless.
Aiden’s lips pressed into a thin line, and his fingers curled slightly.

Some people in the crowd even started looking at them with sympathy.
I suddenly laughed. “Ms. Thompson, when you said you’ve paid the price, what exactly do you mean?”
Skyla lifted her gaze, her expression saying, “You know exactly what I mean.”
“Are you talking about that injury?” I gestured to her forehead. “Yes, I was emotional that day. But from start to finish, I never touched you.
“I don’t know if it was guilt or just panic, but you stepped back so quickly the second you saw me. You tripped and fell on your own. Ms. Thompson, tell me. Why does everyone say I was the one who pushed you and ruined your face?”
Skyla’s eyes glistened with tears. She lowered her voice. “If that’s what you say happened, then so be it.”
Some of the younger employees who were there that day couldn’t hold back anymore. “Even if you had a reason, you can’t just hurt someone and act like nothing happened!”
I turned toward the voice, raising an eyebrow. “Derrick Brown, is it?”
Derrick stiffened. It seemed he didn’t expect me to know his name.
“So, you’re the one who pushed me that day.”
