When he didn’t get a reply from me, he ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Fine, don’t answer. Two can play at this game,” he said to himself.
My dear fiancé, I would have loved to grab a keyboard and curse you out for your shameless lies and twisted reality but I’m already dead.
That evening, my mother went to find Keith.
“Why isn’t Astrid answering my calls? Is she with you?”
Keith greeted my mother politely, his irritation with me safely under wraps.
“She hasn’t responded to me either.”
My mother seemed suspicious of him. “Did you two have another fight?”
His silence gave her all the answers she needed.

My mother sighed. “I don’t mean to meddle, but do you remember how long Astrid took care of you after your accident? She stayed by your side through it all, tirelessly watching over you, taking you from doctor to doctor.
“And your ex–girlfriend? She packed her bags and fled abroad the first chance she got.
“Astrid loves you. She was even planning to surprise you with her pregnancy on your birthday.”
Keith’s face went pale as if he’d been struck.
“Astrid is pregnant?” he spluttered.
My mother pulled my ultrasound results from her bag. “Yes, she is. Have a look.”
He stared at the image of our unborn child, his lips curling into a smile he couldn’t hide.
“I’m going to be a father. I’m going to be a father!” he said in awe. 1
A father? Hilarious.
A father? Hilarious.
My child and I are already gone–one body, two deaths.
Keith, if there is an afterlife, I wouldn’t let you be the father of my child even in death. I wouldn’t ever want to meet you again.
Anyone with eyes can see that she truly cares for you,” my mother reminded him before she left.
Keith had just seen her off when his phone rang–it was his boss.
“Come to the police station now. Bring Michelle and Astrid with you. The police need to take statements.”
At the mention of a police report, all the joy of becoming a father drained from his face.
Annoyance crept in.
I could almost hear his thoughts, “You really know how to make my life difficult, Astrid. Meeting you has brought me nothing but bad luck.”
Even though I was the one who lost my life, he twisted it all as if he were the victim.
Keith sent me another message:
[I know you’re pregnant so I won’t hold the emergency call against you. But we have to go to the police station to give our statements now. See you there.
[You’re going to be a mother soon so try to act like one.]
With that, he grabbed his car keys and went to pick Michelle up.
Michelle looked uneasy as she asked, “What’s happened, Keith? Did something happen to Astrid?”
