“It’s their house, what does it have to do with you? Stop causing trouble and eat.”
“I see you don’t treat me as family,” she said, tears brimming her eyes. As soon as she started crying, Georgie began crying too.

Cries and words of comfort filled the space, and I felt my ears ringing. I sat still in my and with my cutlery in hand, feeling completely out of place with this family.
It felt as if all the blame was placed on me, as if it was because I wanted the house that Selene felt wronged and the family was in such disarray.

I had never been treated like this. I set my cutlery down, casually wiped my mouth with a napkin, and said in a calm tone, “You guys can continue comforting each other. I’ll be leaving now.”
With that, I stood up and left without looking back.
After I told my parents I did not want to get married, I was, predictably, scolded.
“You treat marriage like it’s a game! As if you can marry whenever you want!”
“You’re already 26 and still not married. Do you want to be alone for the rest of your life? When your dad and I are no longer around, what will you do then?”
These were the same words I had heard countless times, but somehow, I could not argue back. I did not dare mention anything about Charles‘ family to them. It would only make them angry, and there was no solution to offer,
Plus, after being with Charles for so many years, how could I possibly break up over such trivial matters?
Were these really just trivial matters, though?
Mom glanced at her phone and said, “Charles‘ mother has already humbled herself and sent me a message. Tomorrow, both families will go to look at the house together. You just need to get along with them! What’s with this ‘haughty lady‘ act?!”
I was left speechless, so I could only ask, “Is his cousin coming?”
“No, no, she specifically said Selene wouldn’t come this time. It’ll just be our two families, no outsiders. It seems like they really value you.”
I felt like I was swallowing a bitter pill and could only nod in agreement.
The next day, as soon as we met, Charles‘ mother pulled me over enthusiastically and handed me a necklace wrapped in a velvet box.
“This is our family heirloom, passed down from Charles‘ great–grandfather. It’ll look beautiful on you.”
The necklace featured a large sapphire, and just by looking at it, I could tell it was worth quite a lot.

Charles also took my hand and quietly apologized to me.
Why was he apologizing? It was because he was not mindful of my feelings the other day.
