After ending the call, Ashton came back inside. I faked waking up just as he approached.
He touched my forehead gently. “Still feeling sick?”
I shook my head slightly.
He seemed relieved. “You’re due soon. Make sure to take good care of yourself.”
I nodded earnestly.

I grew used to his visits and even began preparing his essentials in advance. But this week, he had not shown up, nor had he called. I wondered if work had tied him up.
Feeling restless, I suddenly craved cream puffs and asked the nanny to fetch some from a pastry shop.
Once I was left alone, I picked up a book on parenting to prepare myself for the baby’s arrival.
The doorbell rang unexpectedly.
I smiled, certain it was Ashton. After all; the pastry shop was a bit far, so the nanny would not be back for a while.
I happily walked over and opened the door, but my smile froze.
Mallory stood there, her face devoid of expression.
My first instinct was to shut the door. But she was faster and grabbed the door handle firmly.
I looked up at her, and she forced a stiff smile. “What are you so afraid of?”
