Thad to take quite a lot of painkillers after arriving back home to ease the pain.
I lay on the sofa with my eyes closed and felt that dying just like that would be a good thing
There wouldn’t be any more pain if I died.
“Mom…” Laura quickly ran over to me and wrapped her arms around me. “I don’t want Dad anymore. I don’t want Mom to be in a quarrel with Mr. Frost.”
‘Mr. Frost?‘ I wondered.
It took me a while to realize that Laura was referring to James.
“Aw, don’t cry, Laura. I promise you that I won’t quarrel with him anymore.”
I pulled Laura into my arms and rested my chin on her forehead. Tears trickled down my face uncontrollably.
That was when my phone suddenly started ringing. It was my best friend, Rory Lister.
I quickly wiped the tears from my face and asked Laura to sit by my side before accepting the video call request.
“What made you call me today, Rory?” I asked.
Rory smiled. “I just finished today’s shooting and suddenly remembered that it was Laura’s birthday a couple of days ago. Are you alright? Have you caught a cold?”
Rory was a celebrity that was more like in the R–list.
She didn’t earn much, but was very busy every day.
“Yeah, I’ve got a little bit of a cold. You need to be careful as well. There’s been a flu going around recently,” I said.
“Where’s Laura? I want to talk to her,” said Rory.
“When are you coming back, Aunt Rory? I’ve missed you.”
I breathed a sigh of relief. It was a good thing that Laura didn’t cry. Otherwise, Rory was going to get to the bottom of things.
“I still need a few days before I come back, baby. I’m so sorry. I’ve been too busy and had forgotten about your birthday. I’ll take you out for something good when I come back, alright?”
“It’s okay.” Laura furrowed her brows. “Aunt Rory, can you come to my school and participate in the event for our parents? I want others to know that Aunt Rory is a celebrity!”
I glared at Laura. “Aunt Rory is very busy, Laura. You can’t be so immature.”
“Okay.” Laura gave the phone back to me and began crying silently in a corner.
My heart ached, but I didn’t comfort her.
She was going to become an orphan and should know not to cause trouble for others. This was the most important lesson of her life.
