I had assumed that under this kind of intense pressure, Shane would agree to a divorce very soon. But when he came to find me again, it was to convince me to go back with him.

“Sign the papers. If you agree to leave empty–handed, then we’ll call it even.”
His head jerked up as he looked at me, his eyes filled with sorrow.
“How can we be even? How long have we been together? I’ve never thought of getting divorced from you.”
It had indeed been many years. From classmates to lovers to husband and wife. I had spent a third of my life with
this man.
At one point, I had been questioning myself non–stop. I just could not understand how someone could change so drastically, but I quickly stopped torturing myself.

He lowered his head despondently, and his tears dripped onto the floor without ceasing.
“I’ll go convince my mother. I only want you. I don’t want the child.”
I could not help but chuckle.
“But I don’t want you, Shane.”
The divorce papers were delivered by Susanna. She had also brought a ton of stuff over, but my mother threw all of them out.
Susanna, with tears streaming down her face, continuously apologized to my mother from the other side of the door.
