“What do you want?” he asked coolly.
Sadie was completely unfazed, and she plopped down beside him.
“Oh, nothing much. I heard that you’re a teacher, and there are some words in my books I don’t understand. Could you teach me?”
She wore a wrap dress with a low neckline that left little to the imagination.
Quinn’s expression darkened as he looked at her. His gaze was filled with barely concealed anger.
He stood up abruptly and said with a cold laugh, “Ms. Shaw, please have some self–respect. My wife is right in the kitchen.”
With that, he walked off, leaving her stunned.
Sadie’s eyes turned red, and she bit her lip angrily. When she turned her head, she found herself meeting my calm, piercing gaze.
Startled, she stammered, “Ren, are you finished with your chores?”

I responded with a soft “Yes,” adding, “If I hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have caught this little show.”
“What are you talking about? I don’t understand,” she said, feigning innocence and trying to change the subject. “Ren, why do you have so many books at home? Are they all Dr. Green’s?”
“No, they’re mine. I’m preparing for the SATs,” I replied.
As expected, her expression shifted slightly.
She forced a smile and asked, “Why? You’re already married–why put yourself through so much stress? Is Dr. Green not treating you well?”

In her mind, she had always considered herself better than me, constantly comparing herself to me in everything.

I had not noticed this in the past as I had been too focused on our friendship. I let her have her way, indulging her need for compliments, and making concessions to keep her happy.
However, in the end, she still had the audacity to cling to my husband in front of my lifeless body.
Thinking back, how much of Henry’s coldness towards me had been her doing?
How proud had she been, knowing my husband had stayed loyal to her?
If she enjoyed competing so much, I would simply make sure she could never surpass me for the rest of her life. After that visit, Sadie did not contact me for days, which suited me fine–I was entirely focused on studying. When I went back to visit my family, I overheard my mother mentioning that Sadie had fought with her husband. Apparently, she was now insisting on taking the SATs.
Henry, being a laborer, probably had no idea how to handle such a request.
