Moved, my mom pulled him into a hug. “Lloyd, thank you for saving my girl!”
A few days later, when my wound had healed, I was discharged.

Chapter 12
The middle–aged policeman came to see me. His beard was longer now.
He looked stern and barked at me, “Be more careful in the future!”
The same expression as always, but this time it warmed my heart.
The policewoman who had taken my statement smiled and whispered, “He was promoted back to criminal investigations for solving this case. He’s actually quite happy!”
I bowed deeply to the policeman, smiling.
Later, I had a banner made and delivered it to the precinct.
A group of officers gathered around to admire it.
The middle–aged policeman looked at it and finally smiled. “Wow, this is something! I’ll cherish it!”
Before heading back to my hometown, the policeman sent word that my best friend wanted to see me.
Through a glass partition, I saw her red–rimmed eyes.
“I’m sorry. I owed too much money. I’m so sorry,”
Furious, I snapped, “So six months ago, you encouraged me to move to this city and deliberately left me in their sights, didn’t you? If you needed money, I could have lent it to you. But you used my life as collateral!”
She tried to defend herself. “They said they only needed one kidney. You wouldn’t die! I had no other choice. I’m sorry–I didn’t know–I’m so sorry…”
She broke into sobs, her voice raw with regret, as if she could truly repent.
I nodded.
“I accept your apology, but I’ll never forgive you. Serve your sentence in prison. And don’t forget to atone for what you did to Daisy.”
Her eyes widened in shock, and she couldn’t utter another word.
The night of my departure, my company threw me a farewell party.
From a distance, my female boss, seated in her wheelchair, gazed at me with a look I couldn’t decipher.
I poured myself a drink and clinked glasses with Lloyd.
“How’s your younger brother? I forgot to ask before.”
His expression darkened slightly. “He’s already passed away.”
I froze.
“I’m sorry. If you ever need anything, I’ll do whatever I can to help.”
He smiled faintly, a little forced.
“All the best to you in the future.”
On the train home with my mom, I received a text from a colleague.
“Did you know Lloyd likes you?”
I stared out at the scenery rushing past the window.
