David sighed. “It happened at midnight. Lyra had already brought the ransom money and was going to pay them, but they were murdered. We’ve arrested one of the suspects, but he’s still unconscious.”
Leo angrily pushed Cheryl’s arm away and stormed off, with Cheryl calling after him, “Where are you going, Leo? Wait for me, my leg hurts.”
Leo stopped abruptly and turned toward her. “Stay home and rest. Don’t go anywhere.”
Cheryl’s displeasure was clear, but Leo chose not to take her with him.

Cheryl’s face twisted in anger as she leered at me. “What are you doing, Lyra?”
I met her gaze steadily and replied, “You can’t leave until Leo gets back.”
Before Leo returned, sheriffs from the bureau arrived, wanting to question Cheryl as part of their investigation.
At that moment, I looked at Cheryl in disbelief.
“Ma’am, the perp who was shot has regained consciousness, and he’s told us that they abducted Mr. and Mrs. Ulric on your orders.”
Cheryl’s face drained of color as she shook her head frantically. “No… I–I didn’t ask them to abduct anyone.”
The lead sheriff’s expression hardened. “Cheryl Faolan, you’re coming with us on suspicion of aiding in the abduction and murders of Victor Ulric and Vera Wolfram.”
