Mr. Westwood didn’t think much of it. As he added some pork to his plate, he replied casually, “Jane is doing great. Anyone who has worked with her sings her praises. My friends are always saying how lucky I am to have such an excellent student.”
“Has she caused you any trouble?”
Mr. Westwood quickly shook his head. “Of course not. Thanks to Jane and Sean visiting me from time to time, or else I’d be bored out of my mind.”
As he spoke, his gaze moved between Jane and Sean, and his smile grew even brighter.
“Mr. Howard, this is Sean, another one of my students. Jane must have already introduced him to you. I don’t need to say much, but out of all my students, they’re the best. What I’m suggesting is…”
His intentions to play matchmaker in front of Tom, like a parent,‘ couldn’t be more obvious.
But Tom didn’t let him finish. He politely but firmly interrupted. “Mr. Westwood, I understand your intentions, but they’re not suited for each other.”
Mr. Westwood’s expression stiffened slightly.
Tom gave Sean a casual glance and said indifferently, “I came here with something to discuss with Jane. I’ve already picked out a future husband for her.”
“Really? But I’ve never heard Jane mention anything about this…” Mr. Westwood, out of concern, couldn’t help but ask, “Who is he? Do I know him?”
“Well, you can say you know him,” replied Tom.
“What’s he like?”
Tom paused for a moment and then said, “He runs his own company, has a good financial standing, and can support Jane in doing anything she wants. His reputation is solid, and he really likes Jane.”
Jane immediately recognized who he was talking about and could no longer hold back. She interrupted sharply.” Enough!”
This sudden outburst caught everyone’s attention.
Mr. Westwood, noticing how Jane, usually so gentle, had lost her composure, realized something was off. His gaze moved back and forth between her and Tom, suspecting that there was some conflict between the siblings.
Jane, realizing her loss of control, took a deep breath to steady herself. “Sorry, I have no desire for wealth. I enjoy my work and the salary I make is enough for me to do what I want. There’s no need for my brother to worry!”
Tom said softly, “If I don’t worry about you, who will?”
“I’m an adult now. I can make decisions for my own life without anyone needing to ‘take care‘ of me, especially not with this so–called arranged marriage!”
