Chapter 12
Kaylee glanced around the room, her eyes finally resting of William. “As Lucy just heard, my mother was the Morgans‘ housekeeper. Simply put, I’m a housekeeper’s daughter. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to attend Mr. Morgan’s engagement.”
Lucy knew all about Alex and Kaylee’s relationship.
She knew Alex hadn’t completely let go.
Since moving into his house, she hadn’t even been allowed in Kaylee’s old room.
Whatever William’s reasons for rushing this engagement, she’d go through with it.
An engagement wasn’t marriage.
If this party could save her family’s business, she could always break it off later.
Find a better husband.
Alex immediately protested. “Kaylee, you’ve been with our family for years. You’re family to me, not a servant, I…
“Yes, I know.” Kaylee maintained her dignity. “I’ll be working that day. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and many children.”
She took out her phone and transferred $6,000 to Alex.
“Though I can’t attend, here’s my wedding gift. It’s not much, but I’m just an ordinary worker with a modest income.” Kaylee looked at Alex. “Please accept it, Mr. Morgan.”
Alex’s expression darkened. “No, Kay, I won’t take your money.”
“I insist. Without the Morgans, who knows where I’d be.” Kaylee pressed on. “Unless you think it’s not enough? I can add more.”
“No, no, it’s enough.”
Alex quickly accepted the transfer.
He knew her salary, knew how frugally she lived.
She owned just a few pieces of clothing.
No jewelry, her beautiful hair always tied back with a simple black band.
Yet even unadorned, she stood out in any crowd.
Kaylee watched him accept, then turned her phone to show Lucy as she deleted Alex from her contacts.
Task completed, she waved to the group. “I’ll let you discuss the important matters. Goodbye.”
Outside the room, her chest felt tight.
After all…
For years, she’d truly believed she’d marry Alex.
But drawing this clear line felt freeing too.
She was just an ordinary person, not meant for their world.

Different social classes.
She shouldn’t have dreamed of bridging that gap.
A man in a suit stopped Kaylee at the hotel entrance.
“Miss Lawson, I’m Mr. Morgan’s driver. He asked if you’d wait in the car – he’ll be down shortly to drive you home.”
She recognized him as William’s driver from earlier.
“Alright.”
She guessed William had something to tell her.
Fine – she’d make it clear she wouldn’t pursue Alex.
Sitting in the luxury car’s backseat, she first checked her bank balance.
She sighed. She’d been impulsive.
After giving that $6, 000 wedding gift, not counting Wendy’s loan, she had only $2,700 left.
It seemed like a lot, but with apartment hunting ahead…
Even with just first and last month’s rent, she couldn’t afford anywhere nice.
The door opened beside her.
William slid in next to her.
Despite the car’s spacious interior, his tall frame seemed to compress her space.
His long legs naturally touched hers.
In the enclosed space, she caught the faint smell of wine on him.
“Did you enjoy dinner?” he asked.
“Yes, the food was excellent.” She put away her phone, looking out the window. “You’re quite perceptive, Mr. Morgan. Few people know I like spicy food. Not even Alex during school, or later at university or the hospital. I rarely ordered spicy dishes. Yet somehow you knew.”
William turned to study her profile.
As night fell, city lights played across her perfect features, hiding her emotions in shadow and light.
“Are you upset?” he asked. “That I’m pushing Alex and Lucy’s engagement?”
“I’m not upset.”
Kaylee turned to face him.
Meeting his gaze without fear, she spoke honestly. “Mr. Morgan, when my mother died, your family paid $2 million. Even though I never received it, that settled any debt between our families. I’m grateful you took me in. I used to think if Alex liked me and wanted marriage, I’d marry him.”

“Mm.” William acknowledged, listening.
“Yes, I loved him once. Thought he loved me too. But the night I helped you, something happened. I realized to him, I wasn’t a girlfriend or even a housekeeper’s daughter just his new caretaker.”

She took a deep breath. “Your family has been good to me. But I have feelings too. I can’t spend my life with someone who doesn’t love or respect me, just out of gratitude.”
“Alex is the only grandson in the Morgan family. He was spoiled, never learned how to truly love someone.”
Kaylee agreed with this,
Alex took everything for granted.
Assumed he’d never lose anything.
She forced a smile. “Mr. Morgan, I understand clearly – my mother worked as your housekeeper because we’re from different worlds. Your company makes more in a day than my family could in a lifetime. I never dreamed of marrying up in society. Once your mother recovers, I’ll move out.”
She needed to make a clean break from the Morgans.
“Alright,” William nodded. “But let’s go back to the first question – how did I know you like spicy food?”
Kaylee tilted her head, puzzled.
William’s lips curved slightly. “Perhaps, Dr. Lawson, you told me yourself.”
