Chapter 13
“I’d never met you before that day, Mr. Morgan. How could have told you what I like?”
Kaylee replied without hesitation.
Though he’d seemed familiar when they first met, after learning his identity, she was certain their paths had never crossed.
She’d only heard about William through Alex.
William had been abroad for years.
When Alex’s uncle died and William returned to take over the company, Alex initially resented him.
Only after the company flourished did his attitude change from dislike to respect.
She’d spent all her years studying or doing hospital residency, giving what little free time she had to Alex.
Even if she’d glimpsed William at the hospital, she couldn’t have told him her food preferences.
William sighed, about to speak… when his phone rang.
He showed her the screen.
The caller ID read “Sister–in–law.”
It was an oddly familiar gesture..
Usually only done between close friends.
She wasn’t sure why he showed her.
Was he asking her to be quiet?
He answered, not on speaker, but Susanne’s voice carried clearly.
“William! What are you doing, arranging Alex’s engagement? I won’t allow it. I have the final say!”
Susanne was clearly furious.
William lounged comfortably in his seat. “I’m in the car heading home. Let’s discuss this when I arrive.”
“Now? Fine, come quickly.” Susanne continued, “But let me tell you – Kaylee is the only daughter–in–law I’ll accept. I don’t care about Lucy or any other girl, or who their father is!”
After hanging up, William turned to Kaylee, who was staring out the window. “My sister–in–law only accepts you. If you want to marry Alex, I’ll talk to the Kingstons. Their company…”
“I don’t want to,” Kaylee cut him off. “Mr. Morgan, I didn’t break up with Alex to make him treasure me. I truly want to end it. I’ll tell Aunt Susanne too.”
“Alright, I understand.”
The roads were clear that evening.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the Morgan mansion.
Following William out of the car, Kaylee noticed he seemed.. oddly cheerful?
They entered together. Susanne was waiting by the door.

“William, I know you’ve done so much for us these years. My husband says we owe our current lifestyle to you. But I should have a say in my son’s life!”
Susanne launched in immediately, clearly angry.
Kaylee stood outside, unnoticed.
William made no move to let her enter.
“I apologize, I may have been hasty,” William paused. “But Kingston’s company is in trouble. Alex doesn’t know. The engagement announcement would solve their crisis.”
“The Kingstons have problems?!” Susanne swayed with anger. “She’s just using our Alex!”
–
“Lucy probably doesn’t know about the company. Besides, they’re living together – they’re a unit now. Alex would want to help them.”
“Living together means nothing – it’s only been days,” Susanne fumed. “He lived with Kaylee for four years she’s the one he should marry.”
“Were they ever really dating?” William continued. “I’ve seen Alex at clubs over the years. The women he was intimate with were never Miss Lawson.”
Kaylee smiled bitterly.
She’d always known this.
“Of course they were dating! For four years!”
“Then Alex was in the wrong.”
“All men are like this!” Susanne burst out. “They play around when young, but once they’re ready to settle down, they’ll realize Kaylee’s worth and marry her!”
Hearing this, Kaylee finally had enough.
She stepped inside.
“Aunt Susanne, I’ll always be grateful for what the Morgans have done for me, but… I won’t marry Alex.”
Kaylee’s voice and gaze were unwavering.
She wasn’t sure how to make Susanne understand this was final.
“Dear.” Susanne’s expression froze before she quickly grabbed Kaylee’s hand. “Alex is just being young and foolish. He just called me, saying Lucy isn’t right for him.”
Kaylee asked directly: “Not right for him, yet they’re sleeping together?”
“He…”
“Aunt Susanne, forgive me, but I need to ask you something.” Kaylee voiced a question she’d long held back. “If I were your biological daughter, would you want me to marry someone like Alex?”
Silence fell over the entryway.
Susanne’s expression froze, words failing her.
She’d always thought from Alex’s perspective.
She knew Kaylee would make a perfect wife.

But she’d never considered Kaylee’s side of things.
Kaylee didn’t wait for an answer. “Aunt Susanne, I’m just an ordinary person. I don’t need wealth or luxury. I just want someone who loves me, who’s faithful, responsible, and dependable.‘

William touched her shoulder. “Get some rest. You have surgery tomorrow.”
Kaylee nodded.
Back in her room, regret set in.
She shouldn’t have spoken to Susanne that way.
All these years, Susanne had been good to her. Wanting her as a daughter–in–law wasn’t wrong.
After much thought, she decided to apologize.
She opened her door.
The hallway’s warm lights were on, and a man stood a few feet away…
Alex.
“Kay.” He pulled out his phone when he saw her. “Done with the drama? Add me back on your phone so I cazuri Zeki
return your money.”
