Alex’s voice dripped with arrogance, that familiar condescending tone he’d always used with her.
“Don’t bother. Part of that money was repayment to your family, part was a wedding gift. There’s no reason to take it back.”
Kaylee stood in her doorway.
One hand on the frame, the other on the handle, ready to retreat and close the door.
The hallway’s main lights were off, only a few small lamps it.
The dim light outlined Alex’s figure.
At six feet tall, he was handsome enough. She used to think he was quite good–looking.
Now his face held no attraction for her, not even worth a second glance.
“Kay, I won’t take your money.” He stepped closer, bourbon on his breath. “Besides marry someone else?”
can you really watch me
She’d spent years believing they’d marry. Now he was engaged to another woman. Yet somehow, it hurt less than she’d imagined.
“Mr. Morgan, when I loved you, you were everything to me. Her voice was steady. “But when I decided to let go, I meant it.”
She met his gaze. “I truly wish you and Lucy happiness-”
“Kaylee!” Alex cut her off. “Drop the act! You’ve followed me around for over ten years. You can’t be over me so quickly.”
His voice echoed down the hall, masking approaching footsteps.
“Disappointed, Mr. Morgan? The woman who used to worship you, who made excuses for your drunk ‘sleepovers, ‘who forgave everything – she’s not crying over your engagement? Even gave you a wedding gift?”
Kaylee finally saw Alex’s true immaturity.
At twenty–six, he hadn’t changed since their school days.
Alex sneered. “I know what’s bothering you. All these years by my side, everything I’ve done with other women, I never did with you, right?”
As his mocking words faded, his hands grabbed her waist and wrist.
“Alex! What are you doing?!”
“Kaylee panicked!
She struggled desperately, but he was too strong. She couldn’t push him away!
“Kay, after tonight, just say the word and I won’t get engaged…‘

The moment she called his name, she glimpsed a tall figure approaching rapidly.
Before she could react, a hand grabbed Alex’s shoulder, pulling them apart, followed by a vicious punch to Alex’s face!
The fist whistled past Kaylee’s cheek, its speed and power ninistakable.
“Ah, fuck!” Alex clutched his face in pain, looking up ready to curse – then froze. “Un–uncle?”
William yanked off his cufflink, grabbing Alex’s collar.
Another punch.
Alex’s lip instantly turned purple.
As he staggered, William landed yet another blow.
Only when Alex was about to fall did William grab his collar shoving him against the wall. His face cold, he asked: “Sober now?”
Kaylee stood watching.
The dim light traced William’s silhouette. His face was expressionless, but his jaw was clenched, dark eyes filled with cold fury. Though hard to see clearly… His rage was palpable.
Alex tried to struggle, but finding himself trapped, quickly nodded. “I’m sober, I’m sober.”
William’s fist remained tight. After steadying his breath, he dragged Alex before Kaylee. “Apologize.”
Alex looked at Kaylee standing in the doorway. Her hair was messy, clearly shaken. In all their years together, he’d, rarely seen her like this.
Before he could speak…
“What’s going on here?”
Susanne rushed up in her house slippers.
“Are
Seeing Alex’s bruised face, she rushed to shield her son, glaring at William. you insane? How dare you hit my son!”
William’s face remained cold. “Ask your son what he did.”
“Nothing justifies you hitting him!”
Susanne gently touched Alex’s split lip.
“Ow…”
She’d never hit Alex. Seeing him hurt brought tears to her eyes.
She shouted at William, “What’s your game? First forcing his engagement, now this! Think we’re in Don’t forget you’re just the second wife’s son! You have no right to act so superior!”
“Mom…”
“Don’t worry, I’m calling your father right now!”
Reaching for her pocket, she realized she’d forgotten her phone.
She turned to Kaylee, “Dear, let me use your phone.”

“Aunt Susanne,” Kaylee stood firm. “Alex just tried to rapene. If anyone’s calling anyone, I’m calling the police.”
“What? Alex would never… He knows better.”
Alex stared at Kaylee.
Her fear somehow drew him in.
“Yes, I wanted her,” he admitted brazenly. “I’ll cancel the engagement with Lucy. If I marry anyone, it’ll be Kaylee.”
Susanne’s face brightened.
“I won’t marry you,” Kaylee said coldly. Looking at Susanne, she added, “After tomorrow’s surgery, I’m leaving. Thank you for everything these years. Let’s keep our distance – seeing a doctor too often isn’t a good sign.”
“Kay-”
“Get those injuries checked,” Kaylee cut him off. “Stay any longer, and I’m calling the police to document everything.”
Realizing her son’s foolishness and fearing police involvement, Susanne led him away.
Once they left, William flexed his right arm, pain crossing his face.
Kaylee suddenly remembered his injury!
Those powerful punches must have torn his stitches!
“Mr. Morgan, one moment.” She returned from her room with first aid supplies. “Let me check your wound in your room.”
William glanced at her loose pajama top. “Change first.”
