Chapter 17
“Of course.” Susanne backed down, her tone conciliatory. “Get some rest. I’ll take Alex to the hospital.”
William waited until she left before closing the door.
Kaylee found herself studying him. His features were classic, aristocratic – almost perfect in their arrangement. Though Alex had some of his looks, their presence was worlds apart.
His shirt was partially buttoned now, hiding his abs, but the fabric still traced his athletic frame. Combined with his position as the Morgan Group’s young CEO.
How could anyone resist such a magnetic presence?
William caught her staring, his eyes dancing with amusement. “See something interesting?”
Kaylee snapped back to reality, her cheeks burning.
She stood quickly, flustered. “No, I… I was just thinking.”
“About?”
“Well… since Aunt Susanne is taking Alex to Honor Medical we might run into them. You wanted to keep this private, so… maybe we should try another hospital.” She gathered her thoughts. “I have a colleague at Metropolitan General. It’s close by. I can ask her to arrange anesthesia and a private room. I’ll do the stitches myself.”
“Perfect.”
William nodded in agreement.
Kaylee had completed her combined MD–PhD program at North Medical University.
Most of her classmates had done the same program – eight years together had made them all close friends.
She messaged her friend Emma Chancer first.
After confirming she was still at work, Kaylee explained the situation.
Emma replied quickly: “Perfect timing – I’m on shift. Let me know when you’re close, I’ll meet you in the ER.”
Kaylee rode with William to the hospital. His car pulled up to the Emergency entrance.
“Kaylee!” Emma rushed to hug her. “God, it’s been forever! Why don’t you ever reach out when you need help?”
“Sorry, been drowning in board exams. Barely time to sleep”
“Tell me about it. Working so many doubles, I’m going bald!”
“Private hospitals are better with schedules.”
“Really? You guys hiring? Sign me up!”
They fell into their usual work complaints until William stepped out of the car.
Emma’s eyes widened, clearly dying to ask questions. “So this is our mystery patient?”
“Yes,” Kaylee said awkwardly. “We couldn’t go to Honor Medical. Special circumstances. Hope it’s not too much trouble.”
“Not at all. Let me get you a treatment room and grab the meds.”

Emma waved it off. Basic suture supplies were readily available. Only the anesthetics needed proper documentation.
She returned in ten minutes with the medication. “All set. Do your thing – I’ll be right outside if you need anything.”
“Thanks so much.”
Kaylee’s gratitude was obvious.
“Please, what are friends for!” Emma glanced at William sitting in the chair. “Right, I’ll give you some privacy.”
