Chapter 22
“Alex, let go of me.” Kaylee struggled with all her might.
Alex gazed into Kaylee’s eyes, tightening his grip on her wrist one final time before releasing his hold.
“I’m sorry,” Alex said, a self–deprecating laugh escaping his lips. “If I told you I once thought you’d be the one I’d marry, would you believe me?”
Kaylee stopped trying to make him stand. Half a meter away, she calmly faced him. “Alex, since our breakup, I’ve reflected on things. No matter how things played out, I never would have married you. I would have realized that eventually. It was just a matter of time.”
“Kay, I know I’m not a good man…”
“Let’s not discuss this further. Treat Lucy well. Taking responsibility for your partner is what a man of integrity should do.”
Kaylee had no desire to hear more of Alex’s reflections, though she had waited years for him to have this realization. But it only happened once he had completely lost her.
“Kay”
“Alex, I’ve let go of the past and wish you happiness.” Kaylee’s tone was sincere.
William knocked on the open door. “Alex, someone’s coming. Are you going to keep kneeling there?”
Kaylee shared the office with other doctors. Earlier, while she operated on Anne, the director took a team to another long surgery. No one would return for hours.
Alex didn’t know this. He could kneel to Kaylee but didn’t want to be seen. Rising, he brushed off his pants.
“Go check on Anne,” Kaylee said. “She needs company after surgery.”
Alex knew he was being dismissed but realized staying wouldn’t change anything.
William watched him disappear down the hall before entering. “Alex may truly regret his actions. If you want to reconcile, I can help.”
His tone was serious, prioritizing her wishes. If Kaylee couldn’t let go, he would assist them.
“His regret is his issue. I’ll never regret my choice.”
“Love isn’t like flowers you can wait to bloom next year.”
“I’m a living person.”
“Not a flower in his garden.‘
William listened, warmth spreading in his eyes. Fearing his feelings would show, he said, “I have something to do. I’ll change your bandage later.”
“Okay, but I’m viewing an apartment at 6:30. Come before 6:00.”
“An apartment?” Alex paused before nodding. “I understand.”
