Chapter 24
“Of course,” William agreed readily.

They were set to meet the realtor at the entrance of an apartment complex near her hospital. The complex was about forty years old with no property management, and the roads inside were cluttered with debris on both sides. Cars couldn’t even drive through, forcing them to walk in.
William’s brow furrowed as he took in the dilapidated buildings, potholed roads, and makeshift chicken coops scattered across what should have been green spaces.
Noticing his expression, Kaylee said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Mr. Morgan. All the places I’m looking at are similar to this. Please feel free to leave if you have other things to do.”
“I’m staying,” William replied firmly.
Their realtor turned out to be a woman. Upon meeting them, she gestured upward, “This building is six stories tall. The apartment we’re viewing is on the fifth floor – not the top floor, so you won’t have to worry about leaks.”
Given the rundown surroundings, she struggled to find other positive features to highlight.
As they climbed the stairs together, just reaching the fourth floor…
In the dim light, a rat suddenly scurried down the handrail.
“Oh God! A rat!” The realtor dropped into a crouch, frozen in fear.
Kaylee calmly tracked the rat with her eyes until it disappeared, then patted the realtor’s shoulder. “It’s gone now, everything’s fine.”
The realtor looked at her in amazement. “You’re… you’re not afraid of rats?”
“I’m a doctor. We use rats and frogs for experiments and dissections,” Kaylee replied nonchalantly.
Truth was, she used to be terrified of them.
But when she was with Alex, she couldn’t show fear because he was scared of these things too. Alex wasn’t just afraid of rats – he feared caterpillars, snakes, and all kinds of insects. Whenever they encountered any of these creatures, he would hide behind her, demanding that she chase them away.
Though scared herself, she never had the luxury of showing weakness. She had forced herself to stay calm and protect Alex. Eventually, medical school had helped strengthen her nerves.
They quickly viewed the first apartment – a one–bedroom unit. Despite the complex’s shabby exterior, the interior was relatively clean and came furnished with basic amenities.
After showing them several more units, just as Kaylee was about to choose the first apartment, the realtor took a phone call.
She returned excited, “Miss Lawson, a new listing just came up – one bedroom, $1,200 a month, one month’s deposit and first month’s rent. The landlord is very particular though, with lots of requirements. They just evicted the previous tenant. Would you like to take a look?”
“Why were they evicted?” Kaylee asked curiously.
“I think they secretly kept pets,” the realtor explained. “This apartment is newly renovated with great furnishings. The landlord only rents to women, demands perfect care of the property, no pets allowed, must be clean they even do regular inspections.”

“Well… let’s take a look,” Kaylee said, intrigued.
The apartment was in a new complex next to Honor Medical. Though listed as a one–bedroom, it was actually three bedrooms converted into one large space.
The floor plan was perfect, luxuriously decorated with high–end furniture. This place would easily rent for $ 5,200, let alone $1,200.
After just one walkthrough, Kaylee removed her shoe covers at the entrance and said firmly to William, “I won’t be renting this one.”
