“But he took it on…” Kaylee knew this because the outcome was clear to everyone – William was now the head of the Morgan family. Even after Victoria had scolded him yesterday, she still had to apologize later.
“Exactly. My dad says his company’s board members all opposed it, but William used his own money to save the Morgans. Dad calls it the only unsolved mystery about William – why he’d rescue a family that had treated him so ordinarily,” Wendy said, mimicking her father’s tone.
The two girls lay on the same bed, with Kaylee scrolling through her phone as she asked, “Could it be that the Morgans were actually good to him, but others just didn’t know about it?”
“Good? Hell no. His father’s first wife died early, and his marriage to William’s mom was basically a middle–aged arrangement without much love. His mom was almost forty when she had William, and soon after his birth, mother and son moved abroad, rarely returning,” Wendy explained, leaning closer to whisper, “I heard William had mental health issues before and attempted suicide several times overseas. Someone who went to high school with him spread that story.”
“Him? Suicide?”
Kaylee couldn’t help but think of the scars on his back. How did he get those? Was he bullied at school?

off this right?”
The next day.
Henry was puzzled about Kaylee’s rejection of the apartment. In William’s office, he complained, “Boss! I don’t get it – it was such a good deal! Why would she refuse?”
“She took one look and figured out I was behind it,” William set down his documents. “Said she didn’t believe good luck would just fall into her lap.”
“Boss, she’s playing you – clearly fishing for more,” Henry lounged on the office couch, about to put his feet up on the coffee table.
One look from William made him quickly retract his legs.
“Don’t judge her by the standards of the women you know, William said, picking up another document and signing it after a brief review.
Henry crossed his legs, settling into a more comfortable position. “Sure, sure. But Boss, if she wanted to catch a big fish like you, she wouldn’t even need a fishing rod – you’d jump right into her arms.”
Henry hadn’t understood William’s feelings for Kaylee before. Not until a few years ago, when William spent everything he had to save the Morgan family that had never treated him well.
As an outsider, Henry thought William was an absolute fool for spending so much money on such ungrateful people.
He’d complained about it to William for a month.
Then one night, over drinks, William said something that made it all click: “If the Morgans went bankrupt, her life with Alex would be difficult.”
That’s when Henry realized life was fair after all – it had given William a genius mind, but also made him
