Chapter 30
Meanwhile Wendy wanted to shop for some new outfits.
As the daughter of a top lawyer who charged by the minute Wendy naturally headed to North City’s most exclusive luxury shopping district, lined with high–end flagship stores.
Before she could decide which store to visit, a familiar car pulled up in front of a famous luxury boutique. Alex and Lucy stepped out, with Lucy clinging affectionately to his arm as they entered the store.
“This jerk Alex! He was so stingy with you back then, but now he’s buying luxury goods for Lucy? Let’s go see what they’re getting!” Wendy pulled Kaylee toward the store.
“Don’t bother – I was the one who always refused gifts,” Kaylee explained. Throughout their relationship, she’d turned down most of Alex’s gifts except for birthday presents. The reason was simple she couldn’t afford to give gifts in return, even at a tenth of the price. Eventually, Alex had stopped offering except on her birthday.
“Well, I wanted to check out this store anyway!” Wendy was inexplicably fired up and insisted on going in, with Kaylee unable to stop her.
When they entered, Alex and Lucy weren’t visible in the main showroom. As Kaylee wondered where they’d gone, Wendy pointed out several shoes and dresses, then told the sales associate “I’d like to see the VIP room.”
The associate politely led them to a private room. The space was quiet until…
“It’s me, go ahead,” Alex’s voice carried from the hallway.
The associate apologized quickly “Sorry, the soundproofing between the hallway and VIP rooms isn’t great.”
Essentially, conversations couldn’t be heard between VIP rooms, but hallway conversations were a different story.
Apparently unaware of this, Alex continued his call “Where did you hear this? How reliable is it?”
“If that’s happening in their family, wouldn’t my uncle know? He’d never let us get engaged if he knew.”
“I got it. I’ll ask him tomorrow.”
During his conversation, Wendy and Kaylee remained silent by unspoken agreement. Wendy tried on a pair of shoes, showing them to Kaylee with a questioning look. When Kaylee nodded, she mouthed “I’ll take them!” to the associate, who understood immediately.
“Honey,” Lucy’s voice drifted in “come help me choose which dress to wear for our engagement party…‘
“You’re beautiful with a great figure – you’ll look stunning in anything,” Alex replied sweetly, though his tone held a hint of dismissiveness.
“This might be my only chance to look beautiful. Your mother mentioned wanting grandchildren soon. What if I’m pregnant before the wedding? I might not fit into a pretty wedding dress…”
Lucy’s voice dripped with sweetness.
“Don’t worry, after the baby’s born, I’ll give you another wedding. You can wear any beautiful dress you want then.
“Honey…”
As they continued their lovey–dovey exchange outside, Wendy made multiple gagging gestures in the VIP room. Finally, she couldn’t hold back, “That lady out there should open her eyes. Once a cheater, always a cheater.”
