Chapter 121 – Is it really over?

Zara’s POV

I managed to escape from under Levi’s watchful eye. He quickly attended to Ronan, and I slipped away into the cave.

I took care to remain invisible; I didn’t want them to know I was there.

I crawled closer on my belly, hiding my scent. I could hear Alpha Jack, smell the sulfur in the air, and feel the vibrations of Nicolas’s heart pounding uncontrollably with anger.

“She’s back!” Kaya suddenly mused happily, making me frown.

“Who…?” My thoughts trailed off, feeling the surge of power burning through my veins.

“My magic?” I whispered, surprised. “She is back? She feels kind of pissed?”

Kaya nodded, getting on her feet. “She doesn’t like what Alpha Jack just said!”

“Me too,” I replied.

It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen and experienced.

The indescribably strong surge of magic coursing through my veins was incredible.

I wasn’t sure how my magic found its way back to me, but I guess when Jamie changed into that hideous creature, he must have slipped his hold on me.

I suddenly experienced an overwhelming sense of strength, as if I could accomplish anything and everything with the simple flick of a finger. My anxiety has vanished, replaced with a deadly calmness.

A small chuckle escaped my lips; my magic was taking control, making me focus on my surroundings.

Nic was still struggling under the dragon, yet I was surprised that the dragon hadn’t killed him yet. Was he waiting for something? Or was there some kind of hold on the beast?

I concentrated on the enchantment ensnaring him; it appeared as though a red string was bound to his wrist, establishing a direct connection with Jamie.

There was no way that Nic would survive like that—not while Jamie was in control.

“I need to break the connection,” I whispered. “That is the only way…”

It was as if my magic understood every word I said. I could feel her moving inside me. She urged me forward to stand in the bit of moonlight that was seeping through the cave ceiling.

As soon as I stepped in under the moonlight, my magic frantically moved around me and siphoned up the light. I could feel it move inside me. I could hear its whispers indicating the necessary actions.

I shook my head in amazement. My abilities exceeded my expectations. She was more powerful than I ever expected she would be.

“She is ready,” Kaya mused.

I didn’t hesitate for a moment; I walked straight to the beast. His scorching-hot flames burned and melted everything around me, yet she protected me from any harm.

I pushed forward, feeling my magic getting excited inside me; she was ready to drive the darkness and evil away!

I gave her control, letting her take charge. She knew what she needed to do.

A blinding white light appeared and forced the beast away from Nicolas. I watched in amazement as the hold on Nicolas broke and his magic got restored.

My attention moved to Nic, standing and watching in awe. His face was frozen in wonder and pride.

When the dragon retreated, I went to him, searching for his comfort.

I have missed him so much. I have missed his touch. I have missed his breathing. I have missed his love.

“You came for me,” I whispered when I reached him, but Nicolas’s bewildered gaze swept over the room. He seemed anxious about something.

“There is no exit!” Kaya whispered. “He is worried you’ll die.”

“He shouldn’t be worried about that,” I said. “We can just open a portal and leave.”

“He doesn’t know that,” Kaya chuckled.

I calmly raised my hand and slowly moved it to open a portal. I wasn’t sure where it would take us, but anywhere but here would be good.

I grabbed Nicolas’s hand, sighed when the tiny familiar tingles appeared—seemed like Jamie’s ritual didn’t work—and pulled him toward the portal.

However, Nicolas didn’t move. He seemed startled by what I he was seeing.

“It’s alright,” I said, trying to comfort him. “It’s all safe.”

An enraged roar erupted from the darker side of the cave, and my gaze snapped toward the sound. The dragon was fighting to get on its feet.

Nicolas pulled me toward the portal, then he hesitated, unsure.

“On three,” I said, cupping his face.

Uncertainty crossed his eyes; he was struggling within himself.

“One,” I said. Nicolas’s eyes snapped to me.

“Two,” I counted, hearing the dragon moving closer.

“Three,” Nicolas unwillingly jumped through the portal.

The cave ceiling came down just as I passed through, and I landed on top of Nicolas.

Nicolas winked at me, a smile tugging on his lips, and raised a teasing eyebrow. I could feel his member growing. against my abdomen.

“Nic…!” My thoughts died off. From beyond the portal came the sound of a cave collapsing, mixed with a frantic roar. Nic and I both quickly turned our heads to look at it.

Desperate to leave the collapsing cave, the dragon pushed his head through the portal, searching for a way out.

We both scrambled to our feet and took a desperate step back. Nicolas’ expression turned fearful. More serious issues will arise if the dragon is able to escape the cave.

“Close the portal!” Kaya yelled.

“How?” I asked, panicked.

“The same way as you opened it!” She growled in disbelief.

“Are you sure?” I asked. “Usually it closes by itself?”

The dragon managed to push one of his heads through the portal, his jaws snapping in our direction.

“F*ck!” I heard Nicolas curse.

I quickly closed my eyes, did a silent prayer, and moved my hand in the air. The sound of the dragon’s roar died off, and something dropped on the soft grass.

“You can open your eyes now,” Nic said, his voice teasing.

I slowly peeked through one eye, seeing the portal has closed. Nic was holding something, and my eyes snapped open.

“What in the world?” I gasped.

“The portal’s closure cut it off,” he smirked.

I looked at it in shock. I never expected that that would happen.

Nicolas inspected it for a moment—it was transforming back to human. The magic that made it a monster had worn off.

“That was…” For a moment, Nic struggled to find the right words. I knew what he meant. There were no words to describe what we just saw.

“I am sorry,” I whispered, changing the subject. “I should have never run away like that.”

Nicolas dropped the head on the grass and pulled me to his rock-hard chest.

“I should be the one to apologize,” he said, tenderly wiping a stray hair from my face. “I should have told you about Isabella.”

“Yes, you should have,” I agreed. “But I should have given you a chance to explain yourself, not run off and get everyone in trouble. Will you ever forgive me?”

Nicolas held my gaze. There was only warmth and love in his blue eyes.

He crushed his lips onto mine; the urgency in the kiss didn’t go unnoticed. He was pouring out all his suppressed emotions in the kiss.

“There is nothing to forgive,” he said when he pulled away from the kiss. “I am just glad that you are safe and everything is over…”

His gaze shifted down to the head; it wasn’t Jamie’s, but one of the rogues.

“I have never seen anything like that,” Nicolas said, raising an eyebrow. “Do you think Jamie is still alive?”

“I am not sure,” I replied. “But I doubt it….”

There was no chance he would survive, but as a precaution, I’ll send someone in to make sure.

“What about Alpha Jack?” he said. I was wondering the same thing.

Nicolas suddenly stiffened, and his gaze became hazy. He was mind-linking someone.

A moment later his blue eyes shifted back to me, and he smiled.

“Alpha Jack is in custody,” he said. “Your father caught him trying to sneak out of the tunnels. They are taking him to the dungeons.”

My heart pounded, and anxiety surged within me. Alpha Jack was dangerous, and once my father’s friend. Would he use my father to escape?

“Does he have any—”

“Levi and Alpha Kyle are with him,” Nicolas cut me off, taking my hands and kissing my wrists. “I don’t think he will be able to escape anytime soon.”

I slowly nodded, processing the information.

“Is it really over?” I whispered, finding Nicolas’s gaze.

“Really, really,” he said, kissing the side of my head. “Let’s get you home.”
