After a long pause, I smiled and said, “Nathan, I hope I never see you again.”

After I said those words and disappeared into the crowd, Nathan stood frozen, unable to move.
He felt an overwhelming sense of panic for a moinent, as though he were about to lose something incredibly important.
It was the same feeling he had when I calmly signed the divorce papers–that unsettling sense of unease settling in his chest.
I didn’t yell or make a scene–I seemed to have anticipated everything coming.
Just a little while ago, I was furious with him for forgetting my birthday, which caused a massive argument. I even slapped him.
Nathan had thought I would go wild when he suggested the fake divorce and that I would cause chaos; he was prepared to handle it.
But I didn’t. I simply picked up the pen and signed. My expression remained calm.
He had briefly considered stopping me, but in the end, he did nothing.
He thought it was okay because I loved him. This was just a fake divorce. After the storm passed, he would just make it up to me.
But Jenny was different. He couldn’t let her suffer because of him. If it hadn’t been for Donald taking a chance on Nathan’s talent and risking being kicked out of the board of directors to invest in his projects, Nathan would never have made it to where he was today.
He owed Jenny.
Donald had asked him to care for Jenny and to ensure she had a good life. He couldn’t betray that trust.
