Chapter 8
Henry decided that if Sadie wanted to take the exams, so be it, and even bought her some books to study.
Nonetheless, Sadie grew frustrated and overwhelmed after just two days, leading to another heated argument with Henry. In her fury, she even slapped him on the head, leaving him with a visible injury.
When I heard about it, I could not help but feel a sense of karmic justice. It put me in such a good mood that I focused on my studies with even more determination.
The night before the SATs, Sadie showed up at my door unexpectedly.
She carried a pot of chicken noodle soup, claiming she had made it to encourage me.
“Ren, I specially made this for you. I used the hen my mother–in–law had raised for three years! It’s delicious- you have to try it,” she said with a bright smile.
I looked at the golden broth in the pot and replied calmly, don’t dare drink it.“.
“Why not? Are you afraid I put something in it?”
Ha. I did not think she would expose herself so easily.
Ishrugged. “Exactly. I’m worried that you spiked it with something.”
Sadie’s face turned red with anger, and a flicker of resentment flashed across her eyes before she quickly masked it with a smile.
“We’ve been sisters for over a decade yet you still don’t trust me? That’s so hurtful. Look, I’ll drink some first to prove it.”
She poured a bowl of soup, gulped it down in a few gulps, and then refilled it before handing it to me.
“See? Now do you believe me?” she asked.
Seeing the flattering look on her face, I smiled back at her before saying, “I believe you, but-”
Before I could finish, Quinn’s voice came from behind me. “Ren, Mom’s calling you. Come inside.”
“Okay!” I replied cheerfully, not sparing Sadie another glance as I bid her goodbye and walked inside with Quinn.
The next day, Quinn took the day off to accompany me to my exams. When I finished and stepped outside, handed me a thermos of hot coffee.

“Sadie spent the whole night in the bathroom yesterday and ended up in the hospital,” he said casually.
“How did someone like her manage to trick me for over 20 years?”
I chuckled and looked at him. “It’s fine. You weren’t her only victim.”
My words made him laugh, and he brushed a drop of coffee from the corner of my mouth.
“Exactly. We’re like a pair of partners in misfortune, both taken down by the same person.”
“Well, let Henry enjoy that ‘fortune‘ from now on. We’ll just focus on living our best lives.”
Hand in hand, we strolled home at a leisurely pace. However, as we approached the door, we saw a figure crouched near it.
