His eyes darted to me before he abruptly stopped talking.
Leonard’s fists were clenched so tightly I could hear them cracking. All of a sudden, he darted over to Robyn and yanked the gold bangle right off her wrist.
“Ou–Ouch! That hurts!” Her eyes were flung open in pain, and tears streamed down.
“Disgusting filth.”
Leonard then strode over and started chucking clothes and suitcases out the door.
I breathed out a long breath of relief and then glanced at Shane.
“How nice. You’ve got someone queued up in line. The divorce papers are coming in handy now too. If you still don’t sign them, you’re going to end up in jail.”
Shane hung his head low in silence for quite a while. When he finally raised his head again, his eyes were filled with trepidation.
“Miley, it’s not what you think. I…”
My mother had already had enough. She dragged and pulled Susanna and Shane then shoved them both out the door. The door shut with a loud bang.
“Divorce? Nice try! We’ll just as well sue you for bigamy!” yelled my mother at the top of her voice.
For the next few days, my phone was never quiet. After Susanna, it was Shane. And sprinkled in between their calls was Robyn’s.
Maybe it was because I refused to answer any of their calls, so Robyn went to seek out my brother instead.
When Leonard came home and brought this up, anger was still clearly etched across his face.
“How can she be so shameless? Actually asking me to convince you to get a divorce? I mean, the person who’s not signing the papers is Shane, not you.”
My mother handed me some sliced fruit. Calmly, she said, “Your mother–in–law came to find me too, but I didn’t let her enter the building. She was sobbing so hard, saying that for the sake of her husband, they had to keep that child no matter what.”
That was something I had already expected, but I was surprisingly not that torn up about it. It was as if after that night of tossing and turning, I had removed myself from this ridiculous mess.
My mother told me that Susanna wanted the child, but she was also afraid that Shane would be sent to jail.
“Basically, what she means is to just have Shane leave the marriage without taking any assets.”
So, they were going to use money to solve their problems.
