Chapter 12
Chapter 12
PATRICIA
I rubbed my arms as I waited for Mr. Cooper, who escorted the lawyer out. I still couldn’t believe I had signed the contract, that all that was left was for me to start with the book–that I had gotten the job, although this sounded more like a cooperation. I was still glad I had something to hope for.
I will give my best; it will do great. I motivated myself. “Thank you,” I said to the lady whose name I’ve now learned was Florence- remember the lady who humiliated me? She was the HR responsible for recruiting authors. She didn’t respond; she just rolled her eyes and left, which was honestly not my concern. I got the contract; that’s all that mattered. “Mr. Cooper,” I stood up as he returned to his
“You can call me Richard”
“Alright, Richard it is,” I said, and he smiled before congratulating me again and asking when he could expect the draft.
“We will be needing quotes from the book so we can start with the advertising process.”
“Already?”
“Yes, Florence will help you create a social media account. Don’t worry, I know she’s a bit stubborn, but you’ll like her, and she’s very good at her job. That’s why I want her to specifically work on you,” he said, making me nod my head. Well, she sure didn’t seem to like me. “I believe in you. Those drafts I’ve read and the story you just told me, I can see thousands of sold copies already. You will do great.” he said, and again I nodded my head as I tried so hard to believe him. I really had to work hard because now someone’s life depended an iட

“Thank you, Mr–Richard.” I almost said, Mr. Cooper.
“You’re welcome. Alright, I guess we are done for today. Come back tomorrow, and Florence will show you your office. Now that’s just for your personal space in case you have something to do; otherwise, you can write while in your bed,” he said, which made me giggle. “Freedom,” he added.
“Yes, it sure is freedom, alright. Once again, thank you” I said, and he said he should be the one to thank me. After bidding him goodbye, I was going to leave when he asked if I called a cab and I told him no and was going to tell him I was about to order a ride when he offered to drop me.
“Tinsist,” he said, taking his suit jacket from the seat as I refused, saying I didn’t want to be a bother.
I had no choice but to follow him; I was too excited, so I wasn’t really in the place but didn’t miss the stares and gossip from the company, as they all seemed shocked, some even waved at me.
Outside, we found a man standing there; looking at him, I figured he was Richard’s driver.
“Mr. Cooper,” he opened the backseat door, and Richard told him they were giving me a ride, then he asked me to go in as he went to the other side.
The drive was very quiet, there was just nothing to say, and he also seemed busy on his phone.
The driver asked for my address. Laugh at me, but I still didn’t catch the address, so I instead asked him to track my AirPods; yes, I did that on purpose as I knew I would forget it.
It didn’t take long to get to my apartment, Richard wished me all the best and asked ane to call Florence or him if I was stuck or needed anything. I thanked him and then got out of the car.
When I reached inside my apartment, I locked the door before I screamed out of joy. I’ve been keeping to myself as 1 didn’t want to Embarrass anyself.
“Oh my god, we got it; we got the contract with Cooper Publishing.” It felt like a dream, without much thinking, I got my phone and went to my contacts. I said without thinking as I was about to press the call button, but luckily that’s when I snapped out of it and remembered Logan and I were no longer together.
That thought saddened me, I couldn’t believe I was about to call him. I mean, even if we were together, calling him would just anger him, as his idea was for me to sit at home and be a housewife. Whenever I brought up work, he would get so angry and remind me of my job, that being his wife was my job, I mean, I signed up for it, so I always used to apologize,
I went to my email as I hadn’t checked it when I woke up, I then saw I had three unread emails, one about the contract, one from the other company that gave me a job in Florida–they were canceling my application with the excuse that they had no opening for editors at the moment. I knew Logan was behind it, but it didn’t matter anymore, then there was the third.

“Divorce Decree Copy. I read the title, honestly, there was no point reading through it as I already knew what it was. Tears rolled down my checks, and trust me, I didn’t want to cry. I didn’t even feel like crying, so the tears shocked me. I didn’t bother wiping them as I ran my stomach on my flat belly.
“It’s just me and you now.” I said as I placed the phone down. “We’ll be okay, we are going to be okay.” I said even when I had no idea if we were really going to be okay–I mean, that was my job now, to tell someone everything would be fine even if I had no hope, someone depended on me for everything, so this was my job.
It was going to be difficult, considering I was going to be a single mother. What will I tell this child when it starts asking for the father? That he didn’t know they existed? What if it starts blaming me? What if not telling Logan is a mistake?
“I should tell him.” I said to myself as I wiped away the tears. “We can co–parent if he wants, but he should know.” I convinced myself as I walked to where I placed my phone, “Even if he doesn’t want it, at least I do my part.” I said as I reached for my phone and then searched for Logan’s contact, he never picked up my calls, but I was going to give it a try.
