Chapter 8
ENGLAND, LONDON
PATRICIA
I’ve been staring at my reflection in the mirror for quite a while now. I was glad the dark spots under my eyes were fading, as with a litle foundation, the marks could barely be seen, but still, the place I was going was very important, I had to look presentable. With that thought, I added concealer, completely covering the dark spots.
“I can do this” I encouraged myself. “He can’t possibly have people not employ me here; this is not America. I just wanted the job. I really needed it to care for my baby. Yes, Logan sent me another million, making it two million, but I was going to be a mother, that money alone would do nothing in this part of the world. I mean, it can take us through high school, but college really needed this jobs.
Done with the concealer, I added lipstick, although I didn’t really like lipstick, for this job, I had to be everything they were looking for they shouldn’t even have a small doubt about hiring me in the back of their heads.
I then pulled my skirt a little up as it was making me uncomfortable; I don’t know how I didn’t realize earlier, but the bump was already showing
1 was again lost in my thoughts, staring at my bump in the mirror; it would be a shame to terminate it, but if I don’t get a job. I will have no choice. I didn’t have the means to raise this baby, and obviously, Logan would want nothing to do with it, so its life depended on this job.
“God help me.” I muttered before I walked to the bed and picked up the file–1 had put all my qualifications together–basically, just my high school transcript and identification papers, as I didn’t go to college.
Well, I was good at writing: I was already working on my newest book. I had so many drafts, so I was going to show them that
After making sure I was good to go. I walked out of the apartment and headed out as my cab was already waiting for me. I knew nothing about London, and if you’re wondering how I got here, well, Poppy helped me. I still don’t understand why, but she insisted she did it for Logan’s baby. She booked me a ticket and got me this apartment at a reasonable price. With my calculations, I could survive here for two years without a job, and then I would be homeless. That’s why I needed a job.
“To this location,” I said as I gave him the piece of paper that the lady gave me I was seated next to a lady who was reading a novel; she asked a question our loud as she didn’t understand. Well, reading is my favorite, and I’ve read so many books. It so happened that the book she was reading was my favorite, so I answered her question, and we ended up chatting, starting from the characters and then to our personal lives. She learned I was a writer and reader, so when I told her I was starting my life in London, she gave me an address saying I could be employed there, she also told me she knew the person, so she would put in some good words.
She asked me to meet the person when I’m more settled. I mean, I arrived last night, and I was supposed to rest today, maybe do some grocery shopping, but my heart couldn’t let me. This was a big opportunity. My idea was to get a waitress job or even a shop–assistant, bur working with books would be a dream, and I didn’t want to miss it.
Irested my
head against the seat and then closed my eyes as I calmed myself. This was London. I’d never been here, and I sure didn’t know how people worked here, but I just prayed they were much kinder than Americans.
“We are here,” the driver said, and I quickly shot my eyes open. “Cooper Publishing,” he added, and I nodded as I looked out the window.
“Thank you“. I said and almost got out when he reminded me that I didn’t pay him. Oh yes, my card was having trouble doing online transactions. I quickly reached into my purse and pulled out a hundred–dollar note. “I’m so sorry, sir, I didn’t get time to exchange, we can go to an ATM, and I can withdraw your money.”
“No. USD doesn’t work here, pay up, Miss. I have someone to be.”
“I know, but I’m saying-
“I heard what you’ve said, but I don’t have time to go to an ATM: pay up my money” He sounded so serious, and it was starting to irritate me. Yes, sure, I owed him, but I didn’t have the currency he wanted. What was I supposed to do? “You know what, two hundred USD; the exchange hene is low.”
“That’s okay“, I said and pulled out another hundred note and gave it to him; he had a smile on his face. I’m sure he knew what he was doing. Well, I didn’t really care about the notes anymore, I took a pile of cash from the drawer before leaving. I thought I would be traveling to a small town, and I was in such a hurry that I knew I wouldn’t have time to go to the ATM. That’s why I took it–well until Poppy saved me.
Swallowing my saliva, I walked toward the tall building. I’d heard of Cooper Publishing and how they worked with the best authors, but I

didn’t dream of one day standing here, let alone seeking a job.
“Wow I couldn’t help but admire the building, not that it was built differently. I mean, I was married to the billionaire of Florida. I’ve seen most of this building already. Just the feeling of fresh books being made here made it special.
Reaching the door, I stopped and pulled myself together before I walked in: my heart was pounding against my chest. This was it: this was going to determine whether this baby would be brought into this world or not. My head started spinning at the thought of it
1 really wished there was something I could do. Wished there was another way to save this baby, but well. It all depended on this job, and I could only hope for the best.
