Later that day, I found myself walking alongside Elijah through the corridors of the pack’s administrative building yet again. I struggled to keep up with his quick pace, my heels clicking loudly on the marble floors.
“Today, I’d like you to join me in several meetings,” Elijah said, glancing over at me. “It will be a good opportunity for you to get familiar with our operations.”
I nodded, clutching the notebook he’d handed me earlier. “‘ll do my best to keep up.”
“Just take notes for now.,” he replied, opening a frosted glass door for me. “Don’t worry about understanding everything immediately.”
We entered a spacious conference room where a long mahogany table dominated the space. High–backed chairs lined either side, and a massive screen hung on the far wall. As we took our seats, various department heads began to file in, each offering polite nods or murmured greetings.
The first few meetings were straightforward enough–discussions about patrol routes, resource allocations, and upcoming events. I scribbled notes diligently, trying to absorb as much as possible. Elijah occasionally leaned over to clarify a point or provide context, which I appreciated.
By midday, we reconvened in the conference room for a meeting with the financial department. A stern–looking man named Mr. Reynolds stood at the front, adjusting his glasses as he prepared his presentation.
Of course, Ava was seated at the table. I could feel her gaze on me as I passed, but I held my chin high and ignored her.
“Good afternoon, everyone,” Mr. Reynolds began. “As you know, we’re facing a budget shortfall this quarter. After careful consideration, the finance team proposes increasing tariffs on imported basic necessities from neighboring packs. This measure should help bolster our revenue.”
Murmurs of agreement spread around the table. I felt a knot form in my stomach.
Elijah rested his elbows on the table, his fingers steepled. “How significant would this tariff increase be?”
“Approximately fifteen percent,” Mr. Reynolds replied confidently. “It’s a moderate hike that should yield substantial returns.”
I glanced around the room, noting the approving expressions. Elijah’s face was impassive, but his lack of immediate response in this matter worried me. My mind flashed back to the years I had spent scraping by, counting every coin just to afford essentials.
Before I could second–guess myself, I cleared my throat. “Excuse me.”
All eyes turned toward me. Elijah raised an eyebrow but didn’t interrupt.
“I don’t believe that raising tariffs on basic necessities is the right approach,” I said. “In fact, I must staunchly oppose it.”
Mr. Reynolds adjusted his glasses again. “And why is that, Luna?”
“Because if we increase tariffs, the exporting packs will likely just raise their prices to offset the cost. In the end, it’s the consumers–our people–who will bear the burden Those already struggling will find it even harder to afford essential goods. I cannot get behind something like this.”
A silence settled over the room. A few department heads exchanged glances, some looking skeptical, others surprised. Ava leaned back in her chair, narrowing her eyes at me. No doubt she was judging me.

“You make a valid point,” Elijah Suddenly said. “What would you suggest as an alternative?”
Thesitated, my mind racing. “Perhaps… we could explore cutting unnecessary expenditures or investing in local production to reduce reliance on imports.”
Mr. Reynolds scoffed lightly. “With all due respect, Luna, these matters are complex. It’s not as simple as reallocating funds on a whim.” He turned to Elijah. “Alpha, my apologies, but Luna Agnes is simply inexperienced
“Enough, Henry.” Elijah didn’t even look at him, although his tone was cutting enough to make the man shut up immediately. “Agnes, I’d like you to develop this idea further. Present me with a detailed proposal by the end of the day.”
I blinked, surprised. “Just like that?”
“Yes. In fact, you can present it to the whole department.”
Mr. Reynolds cleared his throat. “Alpha, with all due respect, perhaps someone more experienced from the department could-”
“I’ve made my decision, Henry,” Elijah said curtly, his eyes never leaving mine. “One more word from you, and your job will be on the line. Show some respect when speaking to your Luna.”
Mr. Reynolds blanched. “Yes, Alpha. My apologies, Luna.”
With that, Elijah called the meeting to an end. I excused myself so I could get started on my presentation, although really, I had no fucking clue where to begin.
As chairs scraped against the floor and people began to file out, I felt a burning sensation on the back of my neck. Turning slightly, I met none other than Ava’s icy stare. Her lips curved into a smirk, eyes glinting with thinly veiled malice.
“Bold move,” she whispered as she passed by. “Hope you can back it up.
I stared after her, curling my lip angrily, but said nothing. I wouldn’t stoop to her petty level. She’d find out soon enough just how serious I was.
I headed straight to the library after that, a vast room filled with towering shelves and the smell of paper. This library housed copies of every single book and publication in our pack, as well as a other packs. If I was going to find anything useful, it would be here.

Behind the front desk stood a young woman with chestnut Hair pulled into a loose braid and a pair of round glasses balanced on her nose. She looked up from her book as I approached.
“Hello,” I began tentatively. “I’m-”
“Luna Agnes,” she said, snapping her book shut and bowing her head respectfully. “I know wh
My eyes widened a little at her immediate respect, which was something I wasn’t used to. ” could help me find some materials on economic policies and trade tariffs,” I said.
Her face lit up with a warm smile. “Of course! I’m Gertrude by the way.”

She stepped around the desk. “Follow me. We have a section dedicated to economics on the second floor.”
As we walked between the shelves, she glanced over her shoulder. “Are you studying for a project?”

“Something like that,” I replied with a slight chuckle. “I need to put together a proposal on alternative revenue strategies, and honestly, I have no clue what I’m doing.”
She nodded, looking sympathetic. “I can’t say I haven’t been there. Here we are.”
She gestured to a row of books, their spines bearing titles like Modern Economic Theories and Inter–Pack Trade Dynamics. It looked promising already.
“Let me know if you need anything else,” Gertrude offered.
“Actually,” I said, “do you have any recommendations for where to start?”
She tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Well, this one is a great overview,” she said, pulling out a hefty volume. “And this focuses specifically on sustainable revenue models.”
I took the books gratefully. “Thank you so much.”
“Anytime,” she replied with a grin. “Good luck, Luna!”
Settling into a quiet corner, I dove into the texts. Hours slipped by as I absorbed information on taxation, trade agreements, and economic sustainability. My notebook quickly became filled to the brim with scribbles and diagrams as ideas began to form, and soon, I pulled up my computer to get started on a presentation.
By late afternoon, the soft glow of the setting sun seeping in through the overhead skylights signaled that time was running short. I gathered my materials and hurried back to the conference room, my heart pounding in my chest.
Inside, a few department heads were already seated, including Mr. Reynolds, who eyed me skeptically. Ava sat near the back, her arms crossed and an amused expression on her face.
Elijah stood at the head of the table. “Thank you all for reconvening on such short notice,” he announced. “Luna Agnes, have you prepared anything for us?”
I took a deep breath, stepping forward. “Yes. I have.”
Elijah gestured to the laptop connected to the projector. “Feel free to set up.‘
I nodded, pulling out a flash drive from my pocket. My palms were sweaty, but I steadied myself as I plugged it in and turned to face the others.
“Shall we begin?”
