Chapter 73
TARA
Although the call with Aidan yesterday felt rushed since he had to go attend to what I was sure was a knock on his door, I couldn’t help but feel like part of the reason why Aidan didn’t disclose that he was coming back was my fault.
I hoped he didn’t think that I didn’t want to talk to him, but it might have sounded that way. I had to save Nadia from a bad fall, so whatever I was saying got stuck, and he could have taken it to mean that I didn’t want to speak with him.
Well, he was here now, and that was some relief for what it was worth.
Aidan shook his head in response to my last question.
“Nothing happened. I’ve gotten what I needed, so I didn’t have to stay away anymore. I’m right where I should be.“–
I nodded. “Okay then. Welcome back.”
“I’ve got some things in the car. Will you come look?” There was hope shining in Aidan’s eyes, and for the fact that Nadia was already tugging Aidan in the direction of the door, I nodded.
“Okay, but let me just close up.”
“You’re done here?” He asked. “Isn’t it still kind of early?” There was all the 1818 2017
“Yeah,” I sighed. “I have to drop Nadia off with Esme and Jenna. They

“Okay then. I’ll help.”
I didn’t know what Aidan was going to help with in the diner, but I nodded anyway.
We barely had any leftovers from the day’s sales, and that was a plus point, so I packed up the remaining edibles in some containers for the three of them to snack on later in the evening.
Handing Aidan the bags I had packed, I made sure everything that needed locks was properly locked, and I turned off the lights before flipping the open sign closed and locking the doors.
Back at Aidan’s car, he unlocked the back seat and helped me arrange our bags inside, and I wondered what he wanted me to take a look at.
“You said you wanted me to see something?”
“Yes.”
Nadia was still holding onto Aidan’s hand, so he fished his pocket with the free hand for the key to unlock the trunk of his car.
My mouth fell open in a gasp. I couldn’t tell just by looking, but there had to be at least sixteen to twenty shopping bags in Aidan’s trunk.
“What’s all this, Aidan?” I asked when I found my voice. It looked like a preparation for a party!
Just some things I thought you both might need from Attica pack. Some of them are for Nadia, and the rest are yours.” Aidan was smiling hopefully, but there was something else.
I hadn’t noticed it before, but something had changed with Aidan. He looked more sure of himself. Or resolute, I couldn’t describe it in words exactly, but it felt as if Aidan had made up his mind on something that had to do with us.
Leaving that thought for later and pushing it to the back of my mind, I took in the bags,
“I get to have one? Nadia asked with wide eyes, having heard her name. Her free hand was still clutching the white roses which had gotten her full attention for the last fifteen minutes, and she looked nothing short of perfect,
Aidan nodded. “Many, actually. I got toys. More coloring books. Some clothes, and…” he hesitated. “Some gadgets.
Nadia was over the moon.

She wouldn’t stop squealing in excitement, and I found myself chuckling too. Why wasn’t I mad at this?
If it were a few weeks back, I would have been upset that Aidan did something as grand as this for more reasons than one, but I found that I couldn’t do that now.
In fact, there was a little bit of excitement in me too, wondering what Aidan had for me in the trunk.
“You didn’t have to, Aidan,” I said, trying to be modest.
He shook his head. “It’s nothing at all.”
“I don’t think it’s nothing. These things should cost a leg, telling by the number of bags here.” I could see some items sticking out from the bags, so it had to be true. “Thank you,” I said genuinely.
Maybe I could chill on being a stick in the ass for a moment and see what the moon goddess had in store for us.
Aidan seemed pleased. “You’re welcome, Tara.”
He gently pried his hand out of Nadia’s grip to open the bag that he had initially brought into the store with him.
“I wanted to give you these myself.”
I watched as Aidan brought out two white boxes from the bag, one bigger than the other, and when he opened them, each had two absolutely gorgeous and glistening hand bracelets–gold and diamond-. The thought instantly occurred to me that they weren’t all for me.
One set was for Nadia too.
That made me realize something else.
There weren’t many things that Aidan did for me without considering Nadia too in one way or the other. I thought back to all the times that he brought flowers with him. There was always one for Nadia, including the first time, undermining that he didn’t know Nadia then. When our home got flooded, he would have easily asked me to move into one of the shelters for the pack, or at best, asked me to move into his hotel. He considered that Nadia needed a home, so he got us one.
When Nadia went missing and I ran into danger, he didn’t relent after saving just me. He didn’t stop panicking until we had Nadia back to safety. Aidan has always shown me in one way it the other that he cared as much for Nadia as he did for me.
And here he was again, doing just that.
It had me questioning myself.
Did I really know Aidan as much as I thought I did?
