Chapter 53: Lucas
Sutton grabbed my shirt and pulled me in, her beautiful mouth taking mine eagerly. Rhonen rumbled his approval in my head as I gave in to her demands. I was still debating whether to tell her that we had sensed her wolf before Elise had interrupted us. I even caught a glimpse of her in Sutton’s eyes when the intrusion left her frustrated. I shouldn’t have been amused or excited by the quiet outburst, but I was. So was Rhonen.
I managed to pull away from her before things got heated again. As much as I would like to lock ourselves up here for the rest of the day, now wasn’t the time.
“We should get you set up,” I said.
I led her to a cabinet built into the wall around the comer from the elevator. I opened it to reveal a computerized control panel. It seemed more high–tech than it really was. While it did connect to the main security system for the entire estate, it was primarily for the apartment. I typed in a password and pulled up the application to add her identification. I lifted her hand and pressed her fingers to the pad to record them before pulling her to stand in front for a picture.
There are only a handful of people who can access this floor,” I told her as I finished setting her authorization. “But we can lock everyone out if we want to. A feature I think I’ll be using far more than I usually do from now on.”
That probably would have been nice a few minutes ago,” Sutton mumbled.
I chuckled. “I’ll do better tonight,” I said. “Enter in your own code.”
‘Lucas, you guys upstairs?‘ Jaden linked me.
‘Yeah, we’re here,‘ I replied.
I closed the console door and took Sutton’s hand. “Jaden’s on his way up.”
We went to the kitchen and I poured Sutton a glass of wine. It had been one hell of a day for her. I wanted her to be able to relax a little before jumping into the next few days. The elevator dinged and the doors opened. I was caught off guard when Tarrah burst in, making a beeline to Sutton the moment she saw her. Tarrah squealed as she threw her arms around Sutton who seemed just as surprised as I was.
“I thought you were going home,” Sutton said as she returned the embrace.
“Temporary change of plans,” she said. “When Jaden said you were moving to the packhouse, I just knew I had to come help you settle in. I’ve already made some phone calls. We’re having drinks tomorrow night at the Whiskey Grand.”
“Oh… um, okay, I guess,” Sutton replied in shock.
“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to, Sutton,” I told her, worried Tarrah was getting ahead of herself.
“I think she’ll be just fine, Alpha,” Tarrah interjected. “Oh, come on, Sutton. You have to go. Think of it as a welcome party for you and a reunion for me.”
Sutton sighed. “I guess I can make it.”
I looked at Jaden. “I’m assuming you’ve already called to arrange the private room?”
He nodded.
“I don’t think that will be necessary,” Sutton remarked. “That seems like a lot of trouble.”
“Not at all. Only the best for our future Luna,” he said with a wink.
I shook my head with a grin. “I own the restaurant,” I told her.
“Now that that’s settled, we need to find you something to wear,” Tarrah said.
“I haven’t even unpacked yet,” Sutton replied, pointing to her suitcase.
“Then let’s take of that.” Tarrah grabbed her hand and started to pull Sutton down the hall to the master bedroom.
“So…. how are things going?” Jaden asked with a raised brow.
I took a deep breath, exhaling loudly before going to the cabinet and pulling out a bottle of my family’s best.

“That good, huh?” Jaden asked. “I thought you two were getting along now?”
“That’s going great,” I admitted. “Sutton and I are good. It’s everything else that’s a mess. I’m worried if Sutton has anything else thrown at her she’ll…”
“Break?”
“Wouldn’t you?” I had told Jaden about the wolfsbane this afternoon before we left the manor house, so he was caught up with what Sutton was going through.
He shrugged. “Probably,” he said. “But I don’t know about her. Like you said, she’s a fighter. But something tells me you’re worried because you’re pretty sure something else is going to be thrown at her?”
“I think answers may be coming sooner rather than later,” I told him before taking a deep drink. I looked in the direction of the room, making sure Sutton wasn’t coming out. “Soloman stopped by yesterday.”
“You told me.”
“Yeah, and I could swear he recognized Sutton,” I said.
“I thought he hadn’t had dealings with the Dawn Stalkers in over a decade…”
“He hasn’t,” I said. “But it was like he had seen a ghost when he met Sutton. He demanded to know everything about her history I could tell him. He knows something but he’s refusing to tell me. But it had him interested enough that he requested to be the one to travel to Dranfort to look into Sutton’s family.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Ambassador Soloman is personally looking into this? By going into human territory?” Jaden repeated in shock. “I’m not sure how to feel about that. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?”
“Since he’s not telling me anything, I don’t know,” I replied. “Even when I called him about the flowers and Sutton’s mother. He just insists on keeping her protected. As if I needed him to tell me that. But I’m choosing to take that as a good thing.”
“And a very, very serious thing,” Jaden said. “Ambassador Soloman may know a lot of people throughout the kingdom, but there aren’t many I would expect him to go through such lengths for.” He leaned in closer. “Lucas, this could be about…”
“I’m not going there, Jaden,” I growled. “Right now, we have nothing to speculate on. I won’t put her further at risk with ridiculous theories.”
I was well aware of what Jaden was about to say. It had crossed my mind as well after Soloman’s reaction. It answered more than one question revolving around Sutton and her identity. Even Alpha Anders‘ interest in her. But I wasn’t going to entertain the notion. And I certainly wasn’t going to voice it.
I was terrified I’d lose her if it were true.
