Chapter 56
Chapter 56: Lucas
I don’t know what the hell I walked into but it wasn’t good. The energy rolling off of Sutton was palpable as she left. I caught sight of Seraphina at the other end of the room. Rhonen snarled baring his teeth in rage. I wasn’t going to waste my time with her right now. I rushed after Sutton as I linked Tarralı.
What the fuck did Sera say to Sutton? Why is she even here?‘ I demanded. ‘What were you thinking, Tarrah?‘
Tm so sorry, Laucas, I swear I didn’t invite her. Tarrah replied urgently. ‘I don’t know what happened…
I cut her off. Blocking her link. Sutton’s aura turned heads as she moved through the bar. I needed to get her out of here. Catching up, I put my hand on the small of her back to guide her. She pushed my arm away.
“Don’t touch me,” she hissed under her breath. “Just take me back to the packhouse.”
Her eyes flashed brightly as her wolf shined through. This situation was about to get even worse. I really needed to get her out of here. I led her to the parking lot where the valet was still walking back from parking my truck. He pointed to its location in confusion as I took my keys back from him. We loaded into the truck and I headed for the packhouse property.
“Sutton…”
“DON’T talk to me,” she spat.
Her hands gripped her seat. I needed to keep an eye on the road but I could see her claws starting to form from the corner of my eye. I looked to see her breathing rapidly. I er jaw was clenched so tight I thought her teeth would break.
‘Mate, Rhonen told me, ‘Mate wants to be free.
Free to tear me apart it seemed. I didn’t need a mark to feel Sutton’s whirlwind of emotions through our bond. Her hormones were in overdrive with her wolf emerging and with all the added stress, her body wanted to force the shift to release it all. But this isn’t how it should be. She should have heard her wolf first. Before she got to this point. We needed our wolves to help guide us through our first shift. But Rhonen would have known if she had spoken.
If Sutton shifted without her in the emotional state she was in
it would be traumatic.
“You need to breathe, baby,” I urged.
“Don’t fucking call me that,” she yelled. “Don’t tell me what to do. I’m done listening to you. Ah…” She gripped her head, fur beginning to sprout from her arms. “Make it stop.”
I pulled down a dirt path leading into the park that surrounded the packhouse. I was taking her to a clearing that was often used for first–time shifts. I badly didn’t want her to shift yet, but if I couldn’t stop it, she would need space.
I didn’t even come to a complete stop before she forced her door open and stumbled out of the truck. Throwing it in park, I jumped out and rushed around to her as she fell to the ground.
“Sutton, you need to talk to me,” I insisted. If I could get her to talk, I could get her to calm down. “Tell me what happened. What did Sera say to you?”
A bitter, angry laugh escaped Sutton as she hunched over on her hands and knees.
“She told me who you really are,” Sutton forced through gritted teeth. “She told me you were together. She told me you wanted to take her as your chosen mate.”
I felt like I had been stabbed in the gut. Guilt ate at me instantly, I had said that to Seraphina. At that time, it was the truth. If I was ever going to take a chosen mate, it would have been her back then. I couldn’t do it but this isn’t how Sutton should have found out and I knew that was entirely
on me.
“It was a long time ago, Sutton,” I told her, trying to get close.
She pulled herself to her feet, turning on me. “She was… until you got tired of her. What about the others? How many were there, Lucas?”
“Others?” My brow furrowed. “There were no other…”
“Stop lying,” Sutton yelled, tugging hard at her scalp. “How many were there? How many women did you fuck around with? Using them as you saw fit. Seraphina… Daisy… who else should I expect to tell me you promised to mark them? To take them as your mate.”

“There are no others, Sutton,” I roared. “You know Daisy lied.”
*So, everyone else is a liar but not you?” she spat, pacing through the grass, unable to stay still. “You expect me to believe that, Lucas. You’re no different than the others. Parading woman in and out of your bed. Leaving them broken.” She shook her head, unconsciously scratching at her skin as the shift tried to take over. “You sat there and declared how sacred fated mates were and how we were meant for each other. That I’m everything you’ve been waiting for. But that’s all a lie. All you want is to use me, just like Mason. Just like Anders.”
“I thought you wouldn’t compare me to those bastards…”
She gave me a disgusted look. “No wonder you were so eager to keep me a secret. How can I even believe you don’t know what Anders wanted with me? You probably figured it out weeks ago. And you’re keeping me for the same thing. To use me for some sick pleasure.”
“None of that is remotely true, Sutton,” I argued frantically.
I took a step closer, desperately wanting to hold her. To get her to listen. To calm her down before she hurt herself.
“Sutton, baby, you came here with me for a reason,” I said gently. “You came here by your choice. You need to remember why. Remember why you chose to trust me.”
“Because I’m a stupid foolish coward,” she announced. “I was too afraid to leave. I was too stupid to find a way. So I made a fool of myself by letting myself believe your bullshit. But not anymore…” She stopped, squaring her shoulders as she faced me. “I, Sutton Langston, reje…”
No.
