Chapter 59
Chapter 59: Lucas
It was four in the afternoon when I finally refused to take any more meetings, or speak to any more advisors, or read any more emails. I was exhausted. I wanted to be with Sutton. She was the only pressing thing I had on my agenda. So, I closed up my office and headed toward my
apartment.
Rhonen started to get antsy the closer we got to home. He was ready to spend time with our mate as well. It had been a rough couple of days being back. He needed her as much as I did. Maybe more, considering he was bouncing like a puppy on the elevator ride up. The doors opened and I was greeted by music playing throughout the apartment. I could swear I heard Sutton singing.
It was a beautiful sound and a big change from the mood she had been in last night. Stepping out of the elevator, she quickly caught sight of me from the kitchen. She rushed toward me, the biggest, most brilliant smile on her face. She immediately leapt into my arms, giving me one of the most intoxicating kisses. I chuckled as I set her back down on her feet.
“I’m in no way complaining,” I said gruffly. “In fact, I could more than get used to this treatment, but what has brought on this good mood?”
She bit her lip but the smile was still there. “Nova,” she said happily. “Her name is Nova.”
Rhonen yipped in excitement. I took a moment to let her words sink in, making sure I understood her correctly. But Rhonen’s behavior said it all.
Elation and pride washed through me. My mouth was on hers again in an instant.
“She spoke to you?” I pressed happily. “Your wolf?”
She nodded her response.
“Baby, I am so proud of you,” I told her. “This is beyond exciting.”
“She’s still a little in and out,” Sutton said, trying to downplay her achievement. “But Tarrah said that happens the first few days.”
“It does,” I reassured her. “Still, we should celebrate. This is a big moment, Sutton.”
“I agree,” she replied. “I was just about to order dinner from the café. I have something I want to talk to you about.”
“Okay, should I be worried?” I teased.
“I would hope not,” she said. She took my hands and started backing towards the living room. “Come sit with me.”
I certainly wasn’t going to argue the request. I followed her to the couch where she took a spot straddling my lap. I didn’t know what she wanted to talk about but I liked where this was going. My hands slid up her thighs and up around her waist, forcing her legs further apart as I tugged her closer. A rumble reverberated in my chest. Sutton chuckled in response, her hands gliding up my chest and resting on either side of my neck.
“I was thinking…” she cooed, “I want to make the announcement.”
My grip tightened on her waist, matching the feeling in my chest. My heart rate increased from excitement.
“Really?”
She nodded. “But I need a favor first.”
“Anything,” I promised.
“I’d like to try to shift before we do it,” she said. “I know that it could still be months before it happens. But the full moon is only two days away and Tarrah said that it’s very possible that I could do it then. Especially since Nova has been waiting so long. I know she’s ready and…”
“Sutton…” I interrupted. “Of course we can wait until you shift.”
“Just to try shifting,” she assured me. “If I can’t do it after the full moon, we can make the announcement. I don’t want to make you wait any longer.”
“Baby, if you’re not ready, I’m not ready,” I told her. “Waiting isn’t a problem.”
Sutton shook her head. “That’s not what I meant,” she assured me. She took a deep breath before looking me in the eye. “I want everyone to know about us. I’m very ready for that, Lucas. This is about being ready for the pack. I want to feel good enough to be the future Luna.” She pressed her fingers to my lips as I started to protest. “I know you think I am. But the pack needs to think that as well. And having a wolf… being able to shift… I think that will go a long way in building their confidence.”
I knew telling her wouldn’t make much difference, but if the pack could hear her right now – putting them first, worrying about their comfort,

wanting to be good to them – they wouldn’t have any doubts. But it was important to Sutton that she work through her insecurities in her own way. I wouldn’t deny her that.
“You know, you won’t have to shift in front of them or anything to make the announcement, right?” I teased. “You already have a wolf, baby. She has a name and everything.”
“I know,” she replied. “But it would still feel like a deception knowing that I haven’t.”
I looked at her for a minute. Just taking in how beautiful she was. The brightness of the blue and amber of her eyes. Still as unique and captivating as the first time I’d seen them. I brushed my knuckles along her jaw, reveling in the softness of her skin.
“I love you, Sutton.”
Sutton stilled. Looking at me with a surprised expression. I wasn’t planning on saying it. I hadn’t thought it through. But it was the truth. Every part of me wanted her to know that. A smile slowly spread across her face and she got this satisfied look as she sank in against me.
“What is it?” I asked.
“Nothing,” she said coyly. “Nova just told me you’re telling the truth.”
“Did you need her to know that?” I replied, not able to stop my own smile. Ecstatic that her wolf was accepting me.
“No, I didn’t.”
