Chapter 65

Chapter 65: Sutton

Tarrah and the others shifted around Lucas and me. I took a moment to admire their beautiful wolves. Lucas brushed his hand down my cheek before taking a few steps back. He shifted into his gorgeous faded blonde wolf. Giving me a quick nuzzle, Rhonen backed away, tipping his head at the others to do the same. They retreated into the darkness within seconds, completely gone from sight. Leaving me along with Nova in the night

air.

I took a deep breath. Taking as much into my lungs as I could. Closing my eyes, I reached for Nova. She was there. Moving in the shadows of my mind.

‘Take off your shoes,’ she instructed.

I happily obliged, kicking them off to the side. My focus went to the sprouts of grass beneath my feet. The dirt cushioning my soles. I loved that feeling. I sensed Nova’s approval. She continued to move through the fog. I was starting to catch glimpses of her.

I waited. Holding on to my connection with her. But nothing was happening. I didn’t feel anything. Nothing changed.

‘Nova…‘ I called out to her. ‘It’s not working. What am I doing wrong?‘

She darted through my mind. I felt a surge of energy jolt through me but it dissipated just as fast.

‘Let go, Sutton,’ Nova replied. ‘Let me take control.‘

I swallowed. She made it sound so easy. I’d lost control of my life my body for so long. It was taken from me and I’d just gotten it back. To relinquish that to anyone, even Nova… I didn’t think I knew how to give that to her.

My shoulders fell and my knees hit the grass. I was going to fail. Everyone would be so disappointed in me. Lucas would be so ashamed. I felt tears start to sting my eyes and I closed them tightly. Panic and despair and heat bloomed in my chest. My heart rate increased. I could hear it pounding in my ears. Time seemed to drag on for hours.

‘Sutton…‘ Nova said gently, ‘breath.‘

I force air deep into my lungs, exhaling long and slow. I repeated the process, managing to hold back the flood of tears.

‘I’m here, Sutton,‘ Nova spoke again. ‘We do this together. Always.

‘I can’t…‘ I cried. ‘I don’t know how…‘

‘You do,‘ Nova assured me. “Trust me. Like you have from the start.‘

I took more long, deep breaths. In and out. Until my limbs began to relax and the fear retreated.

‘We are one, Sutton. Remember that. I am you and you are me. Accept me!’

I knew that. I wanted that.

‘Take what you want, Sutton,‘ Nova voiced. ‘Make it happen. Let me in.

Another burst of energy shot through me. It was warm and exhilarating. I grabbed onto it. Urging it to chase away all my fears and doubts. It felt amazing. It felt primal. It felt… right.

‘I accept you, Nova‘ I declared.

An ache began to grow from my chest toward my extremities. The energy started to pulse, intensifying the sensation as it moved. The ache grew more uncomfortable. Penetrating into my bones. I gasped as my whole body began to throb, falling forward onto my hands and knees.

Nova’s consciousness engulfed me, dulling my senses. It was like she was embracing me and pulling me away from the pain. I could still feel it, but it was like an afterthought. She pushed forward further. I could no longer make my arms move. Nor my legs.

The process had started.

I was breathing heavily. My fingers itched as claws started to form. A burning sensation tickled along my skin as fur began to erupt. My back arched. A muffled grunt echoed from my throat as the first vertebrae of my spine cracked, starting a chain reaction.

Nova relinquished a small amount of control and I flopped over onto my back. I heard a scream in the distance as the cracking and tearing of bone and muscle intensified. Rushing through my body in a way that seemed to last forever. I started to claw at my skin, trying to tear the pain away. Nova took control again, keeping me from hurting myself.

Chapter 65

I writhed in agony Gasping for air as my lung constricted. My heart felt like it would pound right out of my chest. My organs wrenched, causing more gripping, stinging pain. My vision flashed white before darkness moved in along the edges, creeping inward until I couldn’t see even if I could open my eyes.

But they weren’t my eyes anymore…

It wasn’t my body. I wasn’t me anymore at all. I was… a bystander.

The pain receded. A soreness settled in the background of my mind. I could feel Nova stronger than ever. I could anticipate her movements… her thoughts… The scents of everything around us suddenly became overwhelming as she panted for air. It was fascinating how much more there was to the world I couldn’t comprehend before.

Everything had a scent. Not just the grass and the trees but the dirt and the insects. Even the sky held its own smell. Mixed within them all was the most delicious, intoxicating one of all… our mate.

Nova pushed herself to her paws, standing proud as she searched for Rhonen. He stepped out of the shadows. Taking slow, even strides toward us. Our chest swelled at the look of pride, adoration, and even awe in his eyes.

I looked toward the rustling of bushes as the others made their way back into the clearing. A similar look of awe in their eyes as they tentatively approached. Then suddenly, they lowered to ground, dipping their heads as if to bow before us. Rhonen was the only one to remain standing but his head lowered just the same.
