before. There had been black and
Words fell short of describing the wolf that stood before me. She was like nothing I’d ever seen or heard of white wolves before… but not like Nova. I shouldn’t have been surprised that she was just as unique as Sutton. But I couldn’t have prepared for her.
Rhonen started to circle her, wanting to appraise every inch.
He walked along her right side, admiring the pure white fur that traveled all the way to the tip of her pert tail. This side of it, at least. I pushed away Rhonen’s dirty thoughts and moved around behind her. We’d indulge in those fantasies soon enough. In the meantime, I examined the pitch–black richness of her left side. I searched for any stray strand of white but found none.
Each side was the pure opposite. From her tail all the way to the crown of her head between her ears. It was only at her face where the two tones met in a swirl around her eyes in an enchanting starburst pattern. Her magnificent eyes that were the same pale blue and coppery amber.
Nova tilted her head expectantly. Rhonen chuffed his approval, nudging at her muzzle. She yipped in response, bouncing on the balls of her feet. Just like Sutton did. I chuckled, encouraging Rhonen to give her what she wanted.
Gathering his energy, he released a rumbling howl into the night air. Nova followed with the sweetest sound echoing through the trees. Knox and the others joined in. As our song came to an end, Nova took off. Her powerful legs launching her into the woods for a run. Rhonen excitedly followed. She was fast, but we soon took the lead without straying far from our exquisite mate.
The park surrounding the packhouse was over a hundred acres. It wasn’t hard to spend hours running through the land. Nova eventually started to slow and I pulled back with her as the others went on without us. She lasted longer than I expected. A wolf’s first shift always took a toll on the body. She wouldn’t be able to hold the shift much longer. Rhonen coaxed her to a stop.
He nuzzled along her neck, licking her face, as she caught her breath. She was quickly returning the sentiments. Within minutes, Rhonen had Nova pinned to the ground beneath him. His hind leg pushing her tail out of the way.
Hell no…
I burst forward, forcing the shift in less than a second. I wasn’t going to give him the opportunity to fight me. There was no way in hell I was letting him have her first. He snarled at me for taking over but I didn’t miss the mocking rumble as he retreated into the back of my consciousness.
He’d come closer than I ever had and he knew it. Bastard.
I hovered over Nova, panting as I buried my face in the soft fur of her neck. A sound similar to a laugh reverberated from her throat as she pushed against me. I chuckled as I moved off of her, falling to the ground as she shifted to face me.
“I guess you’re aware we can even be jealous of our wolves,” I teased, scratching between her ears. “He’ll get over it.”
‘Don’t worry,’ a sultry voice sounded in my mind. ‘We like it.‘
I froze.
Was that…? It couldn’t be… That wasn’t… Even when marked we could only hear our mate’s wolf when we were both shifted. They could only communicate with each other at any other time. There was no way I should be hearing Nova now.
Sure enough, she gave me a reassuring nudge against the chest with a knowing look. A smile spread across my face and I pushed my fingers through her beautiful fur.
“I shouldn’t be surprised by how remarkable you are,” I told her.
‘No,‘ she replied.
Her head lowered slightly and her eyelids looked heavy.
“You’re getting tired,” I commented. “You can’t hold the shift much longer.”
‘No,‘ she admitted.
“You should change back,” I instructed.
She nodded and closed her eyes. The process would be faster and easier than before, but still painful. I held onto her as her bones and tendons reshaped and her muscles knitted themselves back to the way they were until Sutton lay in my arms once again. She looked up at me with a soft smile before passing out from exhaustion. I lifted her up and started walking back to the packhouse.
I hadn’t expected the act of carrying my mate home would feel so poignant. The amount of pride and possessiveness that consumed me after being

a part of this monumental moment in her life would never be forgotten. It was burned into my soul. Just like Sutton was.
Sutton started to stir as I was walking back into our suite. I set her down on the table to check her over. A light sweat still covered her brow and she swayed a little but she otherwise seemed perfect. Except for the tears that began to fall as her eyes fluttered open and she looked up at me.
“What’s wrong, Sutton? Are you in pain?” I asked worriedly.
She shook her head. “No, nothing’s wrong,” she replied with a laugh. “I’m just… happy. She’s so beautiful.”
I chuckled, wiping away the tears. “Baby, you have no idea.”
A sly grin spread across Sutton’s face as her arms slid around my neck. “So… you approve then?”
A growl rumbled in my chest. My senses were in overdrive after what we had just experienced. Her pressing up against me so seductively was going to lead down a dangerous path. One hand gripped her hip. The other buried in her hair at the base of her scalp.
“Did I give you any indication we didn’t?” I inquired confidently.
She shook her head, inching in closer until her lips brushing ever so slightly against mine. I pushed her forward, closing the distance as my mouth took hers. The tingles and electricity of her touch taking over my impulses as I forced her to open for me. Her legs went around my waist. Her scent filled my nostrils, stiffening my cock even further.
I pulled her back with a heavy grunt.
“I won’t be able to stop myself, Sutton,” I rasped. “Not tonight.”
Her hands gripped my face. Her breathing labored. Her eyes flashed with desire.
“Then don’t.”
