Chapter 9 

Leo couldn’t figure Julius out. He bit his tongue and transferred the money to Quiana. 

Quiana grinned. She tossed the bottle to Leo, flashed a bright smile at Julius, and said, “Here’s to Mr. Hawley’s health.” Then she headed downstairs. 

Shane took the bottle from Leo. It was blank, no labels or anything. He popped it open to see a black pill inside, no smell at all. Looking at Julius, he frowned and said, “You’re not the type to get fooled easily.” 

Quiana’s tricks were pretty basic, not much better than a street psychic’s. 

Julius took the bottle. After a bit, he let out a chuckle. “This is interesting.” 

It wasn’t clear if he meant the person or the potion. 

Hugo spotted Quiana through the peephole and hurried to open the door. He whispered, “Quiana, those folks were here again today, and Julius himself showed up. Did you bump into them?” 

At nine, Hugo was just about as tall as Quiana’s waist, with delicate features that still held the innocence of childhood. 

The basement was small and dim, but it was spotless. Quiana walked in and casually said, “Yeah, I bumped into him and even sold him a pill.” 

Hugo was puzzled. Thinking of something, Hugo asked carefully. “It’s not that test drug, right?” 

That test drug was new, still in the early stages. They didn’t even have a name for it, and it seemed like they hadn’t figured out its effects yet.. 

Hugo’s eyes widened. “Quiana, you didn’t use Julius as a test subject, did you?” 

Quiana glanced at his dramatics and calmly said, ‘It won’t hurt anyone.” 

Hugo’s jaw hit the floor. She messed with Julius and she acted like she couldn’t care less. Hugo swallowed and admired Quiana’s boldness in his heart. 

After their parents passed, it was just the two of them in this cramped basement. Somehow, it didn’t feel as stuffy anymore. 

Quiana grabbed a beer from the fridge, popped it open, took a sip, and shuffled to her old room in her slippers. 

The room was like a small square box, tight but complete. 

On the bedside table was a blue crystal lamp, and under it sat a pink and white stuffed bunny. By the patch, it looked old, but it was well taken care of. Even when times were tough, their parents always tried to get her toys. 

Quiana stared at them for a moment, and then lowered her eyes, walked over, and twisted the small bulb of the crystal lamp. 

A soft sound echoed as the bed began to lift. The wooden board under it moved aside, showing a passage leading down. Quiana stepped in. 

“Wait for me,” Hugo called as he rushed in after her, holding a few beers. 

The 

passage was just wide enough for one person, stretching 30 feet deep. At the end was a stone door. After the door opened, bright white light filled the space, revealing a huge room. 

“Alarm! Enemy invasion! Alarm! Enemy invasion…” A half–meter–tall robot spun in circles, its cold, mechanical voice

echoing like it was broken. 

Walking behind, Hugo felt guilty. “Well, last night I wanted to test that program, and it kinda freaked out…” He made a sad 

face. I can’t fix it.” 

Quiana slapped the robot on the head to shut it down, tossed it aside. “Idiot.” 

Hugo persuaded himself that Quiana referred to the robot, not him. 

As they went further, the space was bright and wide, filled with high–tech stuff. Two clear glass cabinets stood at the far end. One was on, with weird tools and bottles of different colored liquids. 

The other had glass tubes of all sizes, with strange creatures. People could see snakes and scorpions. 

No one would guess such a lab was hidden in a slum’s basement. Even fewer would think this lab was a base for The Seraphic, the legendary top healer aroun
